Incentive Scheme for Promotion of Domestic PNG Connections

GS3 EnergyGS2 Government policiesPrelims and Mains

Why in news
The Incentive Scheme for Promotion of Domestic PNG Connections was launched on 18 August 2026 and took effect on 1 September 2026; a PIB explainer on it was posted on 13 September 2026.
What it is
It is a Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas scheme that rewards City Gas Distribution companies for adding active, billed household piped gas connections. The reward is extra cheap domestic gas, which lowers the firms' sourcing costs and so the cost of connecting homes.
Who gets the incentive
CGD entities get incentives for converting unbilled connections into active billed ones and for expanding the network into new areas.
Reward per connection
Each billed domestic connection added beyond the fixed threshold earns 200 SCM of additional APM gas.
Duration
The scheme runs in two tranches over six months.
Coverage
PNGRB has authorised entities in 309 Geographical Areas, which together span the whole mainland.
Payback period
The payback on capital for a domestic connection is expected to fall from about ten years to nearly three years.
Regulator
PNGRB is the statutory regulator for downstream natural gas and petroleum products, set up under the PNGRB Act, 2006.
Reward
Eligible CGD entities get an extra 200 SCM of APM gas for each incremental billed domestic PNG connection above a threshold set for each Geographical Area.
Who gets it
The incentive goes to City Gas Distribution companies, not to households directly.
How it cuts costs
The extra APM gas replaces costlier LNG that CGD firms buy for their CNG (Transport) segment.
Current base
India has 1.74 crore domestic PNG connections at present.

Don’t confuse with APM gas vs LNG: APM gas is domestic gas sold at a government-administered price. LNG is imported, costlier gas.

Don’t confuse with PNG vs CNG: PNG is piped gas for cooking at homes. CNG is compressed gas used as a transport fuel.

Great Indian Bustard Recovery Programme

GS3 Environment and biodiversityPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 13 September 2026, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav reviewed Great Indian Bustard, grassland and Project Cheetah progress at Bhuj and released the Gujarat Action Plan for GIB Conservation.
What it is
The Great Indian Bustard is a large, ground-nesting bird of dry grasslands, found mainly in Rajasthan and Gujarat, and is critically endangered. The Bustard Recovery Programme rebuilds a viable population through conservation breeding, habitat restoration and egg 'jumpstart'. The bird is the State bird of Rajasthan.
Programme partners
The programme is run by the Environment Ministry, Rajasthan Forest Department and Wildlife Institute of India, with technical help from the International Fund for Houbara Conservation.
Captive population
Sam and Ramdevra facilities hold 97 birds: 40 from wild-laid eggs and 57 captive-bred.
Jumpstart approach
Captive-laid eggs placed in wild nests were accepted by wild females; six chicks hatched in Rajasthan and two in Gujarat.
Legal status
The Great Indian Bustard is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List and is in Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
Captive stock
Sam and Ramdevra facilities hold 97 birds: 40 from wild-laid eggs and 57 bred in captivity.
Fenced grasslands
About 200 sq km of fenced grassland enclosures in Desert National Park serve as prime breeding habitat.
Gujarat Action Plan
Prepared by the Wildlife Institute of India with the Gujarat Forest Department. It aims at a minimum viable population of over 30 birds and 200-500 sq. km. of safe, contiguous habitat.
Naliya restoration
About 11 sq. km. of grassland infested with invasive Prosopis juliflora has been restored, and the enclosure has 30 km of predator-proof fencing covering 15 sq. km.
Jump-start
Infertile eggs of wild females are replaced with viable eggs from captive breeding. The chick from the second such attempt survived beyond the first three months in the wild.
Soft Release Centre
A centre near Naliya will house and acclimatise captive-bred birds from Rajasthan before eventual release.
Conservation status
The GIB is listed Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List and is in Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

Don’t confuse with Houbara bustard: A different bustard of West and Central Asia; the International Fund for Houbara Conservation only gives technical help here.

Don’t confuse with Lesser Florican: Another endangered Indian bustard, smaller and found in grasslands of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh; not the Great Indian Bustard.

Don’t confuse with Great Indian Bustard vs Houbara bustard: The GIB is a resident Indian grassland bird. The houbara is a different bustard, and the International Fund for Houbara Conservation only gives technical help here.

Don’t confuse with Lesser florican vs Great Indian Bustard: Both are bustards of grasslands and share Kachchh habitat, but the lesser florican is a much smaller bird.

Species and protected areas: 12 Prelims questions since 2013; they test legal status, location and the year of designation.

Don’t confuse with ICRISAT vs ICARDA: ICRISAT works on the semi-arid tropics and is based in Hyderabad, India. ICARDA works on dry areas and is now based in Lebanon. Both are CGIAR centres.

Don’t confuse with ICAR vs DARE: DARE is the government department under the Agriculture Ministry. ICAR is the autonomous research council under it. The DARE Secretary is also ICAR's Director General.
