Don’t confuse with BRICS Summit vs BRICS Parliamentary Forum: The Summit is the leaders' executive-level meeting; the Parliamentary Forum is a meeting of legislature presiding officers and delegations.

Don’t confuse with Member vs partner countries: Members sign the declaration; partner countries are welcomed to take part in engagements but are a separate category.

Don’t confuse with BRICS tax track vs BRICS Summit: The Heads of Tax Authorities meeting is a sectoral track meeting under the Chair. The Summit is the leaders' annual meeting.

Don’t confuse with CBDT vs Department of Revenue: CBDT is a statutory body within the Department of Revenue. The Department sits in the Ministry of Finance.

Don’t confuse with New Development Bank vs Contingent Reserve Arrangement: The NDB funds infrastructure and sustainable development projects. The CRA is a liquidity backstop for members facing balance-of-payments pressure.

Don’t confuse with BRICS vs BRICS Plus/Partner countries: Members are the full BRICS grouping. Partner countries and Outreach/BRICS Plus invitees take part in engagements but are not full members.

Don’t confuse with BRICS vs New Development Bank: BRICS is the political-economic forum. The New Development Bank is its multilateral lender, headquartered in Shanghai.

Don’t confuse with BRICS Business Council vs BRICS Business Forum: The Business Council is a standing body of business leaders. The Business Forum is an event held during the Chairship.

Don’t confuse with Full member vs Partner Country: Full members (11) take part in the core structure. Partner countries such as Vietnam and Nigeria have a separate, structured engagement channel.

Don’t confuse with BRICS vs BIMSTEC: BIMSTEC is a Bay of Bengal regional grouping. It was invited to the 2016 Goa BRICS Outreach Summit but is a separate body.

Don’t confuse with IP BRICS vs WIPO: IP BRICS is a cooperation track among five or more member IP offices. WIPO is the UN agency that sets global IP rules and treaties.

Colombo Security Conclave

GS3 Internal SecurityGS2 International groupingsPrelims and Mains

Why in news
A three-day Table Top Exercise under the Colombo Security Conclave ended at Eastern Naval Command, Visakhapatnam, on 11 Sep 2026. It began on 09 Sep 2026 and dealt with a coordinated response to illicit maritime activities in the Indian Ocean Region.
What it is
The Colombo Security Conclave is a regional security grouping of Indian Ocean states. It began as a trilateral maritime security forum of India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, and later added more members. It works on maritime safety, counter-terrorism, trafficking, cyber security and humanitarian assistance.
Exercise theme
The theme was a coordinated response to illicit maritime activities in the Indian Ocean Region.
Participants
Delegations came from CSC member states and observer nations.
Threats covered
The scenarios covered maritime terrorism, narcotics smuggling, human trafficking and IUU fishing.
Outcome
Participants reviewed SOPs and streamlined information sharing to improve Maritime Domain Awareness.
Policy link
The release ties the exercise to India's MAHASAGAR vision.

Don’t confuse with Table top exercise vs field exercise: A table top exercise is a discussion-based simulation of scenarios. A field exercise deploys ships, aircraft or troops at sea or on land.

Don’t confuse with MAHASAGAR vs SAGAR: SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) was India's earlier Indian Ocean vision. MAHASAGAR is the newer, broader framing named in the release.

International bodies and relations: the largest group of news questions in Prelims (61 since 2013), often about background, members and location. In Mains, 27 news-triggered questions, mostly on India's interests.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting maritime security grouping in the Indian Ocean; the release gives few testable facts such as members or a date, so no question is likely.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Scheme

Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM)

GS2 HealthPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 12 September 2026, Union Health Minister J P Nadda inaugurated 10 Critical Care Blocks and 12 Integrated Public Health Laboratories in Andhra Pradesh under PM-ABHIM.
What it is
PM-ABHIM is a centrally sponsored health scheme meant to build health systems that can handle pandemics and public health emergencies. It funds critical care blocks, public health laboratories and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, so that routine care continues during emergencies.
Objective
The mission aims to strengthen the health system's response to future pandemics and emergencies while keeping routine healthcare running.
Critical Care Blocks
631 Critical Care Blocks have been sanctioned across States and Union Territories under the scheme.
Components in Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh got approval of ₹1,271.80 crore for five years under four components: CCBs, IPHLs, Urban and Rural Ayushman Arogya Mandirs.
IPHL role
Integrated Public Health Laboratories provide district-level testing for infectious and non-infectious diseases and support disease surveillance and early outbreak detection.
Outlay and period
The scheme has an outlay of Rs 64,180 crore for FY 2021-22 to FY 2025-26.
Nature of scheme
It is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme with some Central Sector components. Support goes to States/UTs for district and block level infrastructure and to national institutions.
Critical care target
The target is 602 Critical Care Hospital Blocks in all districts with a population of more than 5 lakh.
District labs
The target is 730 District Integrated Public Health Labs, one in each district.
Approvals so far
CSS approvals worth Rs 32,928.82 crore cover 9,519 rural AAMs, 5,456 urban AAMs, 2,151 BPHUs, 744 IPHLs and 621 CCBs.
Rural AAM target
The scheme targets 17,788 building-less Sub-Centres to be built as Ayushman Arogya Mandirs.

Don’t confuse with PM-ABHIM vs Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY: PM-ABHIM builds health infrastructure and surveillance capacity. PM-JAY is the health insurance cover for hospitalisation.

Don’t confuse with Ayushman Arogya Mandirs vs Critical Care Blocks: Arogya Mandirs give primary care at community level. Critical Care Blocks give intensive care at district hospitals and medical colleges.

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.

Science and technology

Steel Slag Road Technology

GS3 Infrastructure and Science & TechnologyPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 12 September 2026, Dr Jitendra Singh received the Guinness World Record for the longest road built with processed steel slag aggregates (1.85 km, Raigarh, Chhattisgarh). He urged wider adoption across States and departments.
What it is
Steel slag road technology turns processed steel slag, a by-product of steelmaking, into aggregates for road layers. CSIR-CRRI developed it with industry partners. It replaces part of the natural stone aggregate that comes from mining and quarrying, and fits the waste-to-wealth and circular economy approach.
Record road
The Guinness record road is 1.85 km long at Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, built by CSIR-CRRI and Jindal Steel.
Earlier uses
Earlier uses include a six-lane road at Hazira, Gujarat, a one-km four-lane stretch of NH-66 (Mumbai-Goa), and roads in Arunachal Pradesh.
Next project
CSIR-CRRI has a work order for a 40-km road in Odisha from Jindal Steel's Angul plant.
Technology transfer
A Technology Transfer Agreement was signed between CSIR-CRRI and Jindal Steel, and the 'Steel Grit' brand was launched.

Don’t confuse with Steel slag vs fly ash: Steel slag comes from steelmaking. Fly ash is a residue from coal-fired power plants. Both are used in construction, but they are different wastes.

Don’t confuse with CSIR-CRRI vs MoRTH: CSIR-CRRI is a research lab under CSIR, which is under DSIR. MoRTH is the road ministry that builds and regulates highways.

Science and technology: 57 Prelims questions since 2013; most test the concept behind the news, not the news itself. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting waste-recycling road technology by CSIR-CRRI, a syllabus topic; claims are ministerial and facts are limited, so a question is unlikely.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Quick facts

  • In 2017 the government removed bamboo grown outside forests from the 'tree' category under the British-era Indian Forest Act, easing harvesting and transport.
  • A Badri cattle calf, the Uttarakhand state animal, was born through OPU-IVF with a Sahiwal recipient cow, by ICAR-NDRI Karnal and GB Pant University.
