UPSC Prelims 2025 · GS Paper I
Question 97: International Relations and Current Affairs
Consider the following statements with regard to BRICS :
- I16th BRICS Summit was held under the Chairship of Russia in Kazan.
- IIIndonesia has become a full member of BRICS.
- IIIThe theme of the 16th BRICS Summit was Strengthening Multiculturalism for Just Global Development and Security.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
AnswerThe answer is (a).
The 16th BRICS Summit was held in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024 under Russia's chairship, so Statement I is correct. Indonesia became a full member of BRICS in January 2025, so Statement II is correct. The theme of the Kazan summit was 'Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security', not multiculturalism, so Statement III is wrong. Remember: the theme was about multilateralism.
- I. The 16th summit was hosted by Russia at Kazan.
- II. Indonesia became a full member in January 2025.
- III. The theme was multilateralism, not multiculturalism.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement I is correct, (b) goes: it leaves I out.
What you needed to know: The 16th summit was hosted by Russia at Kazan.
- Then, if you were sure statement II is correct, (c) and (d) go: each of them leaves II out.
What you needed to know: Indonesia became a full member in January 2025.
Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statement 3.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right: Kazan and Indonesia's membership are correct; the theme is misquoted.
- (b) Wrong: III misstates the theme as multiculturalism.
- (c) Wrong: III misstates the theme, so I and III cannot both hold.
- (d) Wrong: Indonesia's full membership in II is also correct.
