India-US Interim Trade Agreement and Bilateral Trade Agreement

GS2 International relations: India and the USAGS3 Economy: external sectorPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 7 February 2026, India and the US issued a joint statement announcing a framework for an Interim Agreement on reciprocal trade. It sets an 18 percent US reciprocal tariff on Indian goods and keeps talks on the wider Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) going.
Tariff rate
The US will apply an 18 percent reciprocal tariff on originating goods of India under Executive Order 14257 of 2 April 2025, as amended.
BTA launch
The BTA negotiations were launched by President Trump and PM Modi on 13 February 2025.
Indian purchases
India intends to buy $500 billion of US energy products, aircraft and parts, precious metals, technology products and coking coal over 5 years.
Indian tariff cuts
India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on all US industrial goods and many farm products such as DDGs, tree nuts, fruit and wine.
Standards review
India will decide within six months of entry into force whether US or international standards and testing are acceptable in identified sectors.

Don’t confuse with Interim Agreement vs BTA: The Interim Agreement is a first, limited step. The BTA is the wider pact with more market access and supply chain commitments.

Don’t confuse with Reciprocal tariff vs Section 232 tariff: Reciprocal tariffs come under Executive Order 14257. Section 232 tariffs are imposed on national security grounds on steel, aluminium, copper, autos and similar goods.

International bodies and relations: the largest group of news questions in Prelims (61 since 2013), often about background, members and location. In Mains, 27 news-triggered questions, mostly on India's interests.

Law and statutory body

National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA)

GS3 Environment: wildlife conservationPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 7 February 2026, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav chaired a conference of Chief Wildlife Wardens and Field Directors in Alwar, Rajasthan. He called for a review of all policy decisions from the 28 NTCA meetings held so far.
What it is
The National Tiger Conservation Authority is a statutory body under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. It was set up under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, after the 2006 amendment. It oversees Project Tiger, approves tiger conservation plans and guides tiger reserve management.
Review sought
The Minister wants all decisions from NTCA's 28 meetings sorted into outdated, unimplemented and fully executed.
Policy statement
Decisions of five decades should be consolidated into a formal policy statement, to be the first agenda item at the next NTCA meeting.
Working groups
Four working groups were proposed to review region-specific challenges and the working of centrally sponsored schemes in tiger reserves.
International Big Cat Alliance
IBCA has 24 member countries so far, and the Union Budget announced a first Global Big Cat Summit in India.
Legal basis
NTCA became statutory through the 2006 amendment to the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
Project Tiger
Project Tiger was launched in 1973 and is run by NTCA as a centrally sponsored scheme.

Don’t confuse with NTCA vs Wildlife Institute of India: NTCA is the statutory regulator for tiger conservation. WII is a research and training institute that gives technical inputs, including for tiger estimation.

Don’t confuse with NTCA vs International Big Cat Alliance: NTCA is a domestic Indian statutory body. IBCA is an international alliance of big cat range countries launched by India.

Laws, judgments and statutory bodies: 30 Prelims questions since 2013 (what the law says, who chairs, legal basis). In Mains, 44 news-triggered questions, most in GS2, asking for provisions and challenges.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: NTCA is a statutory body and a lasting topic, but this conference only proposes a policy review. Statutory bodies drew 7 of 327 Prelims questions, so no question is likely from this item.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Science and technology

Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) Vaccine

GS3 Science and Technology: health and biotechnologyPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 7 February 2026, the Ministry of Health said ICMR is advancing an improved Kyasanur Forest Disease vaccine. A Phase I human trial has begun after CDSCO approval.
What it is
Kyasanur Forest Disease is a tick-borne viral haemorrhagic fever found in the Western Ghats. It was first identified in 1957 in Karnataka's Shivamogga district. The virus belongs to the flavivirus family, and monkeys and small mammals act as hosts.
Vaccine type
A fully indigenous, two-dose adjuvanted inactivated vaccine, with doses 28 days apart.
Developers
ICMR-NIV and Indian Immunologicals Limited are developing it, at the request of the Karnataka government.
Stage
Animal challenge and toxicity studies are complete. Phase I human trial has started with CDSCO approval.
Next step
If Phase I succeeds, further trials follow, and CDSCO approval is sought if the vaccine is safe and immunogenic.
Disease cause
KFD is caused by the KFD virus, a flavivirus spread by ticks (Haemaphysalis spinigera).

Don’t confuse with Inactivated vs live attenuated vaccine: An inactivated vaccine uses killed virus and usually needs multiple doses plus an adjuvant. A live attenuated vaccine uses weakened live virus.

Don’t confuse with CDSCO vs ICMR: CDSCO is the drug regulator that approves trials and marketing. ICMR is the research body that develops and funds research.

Science and technology: 57 Prelims questions since 2013; most test the concept behind the news, not the news itself. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: A lasting health topic: ICMR, IIL and NIV are developing an indigenous two-dose inactivated vaccine, now in Phase I trial. Facts are few, so a question is unlikely.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
