Question 80: Environment and Ecology

The term ‘M-STrIPES’ is sometimes seen in the news in the context of

aCaptive breeding of Wild Fauna
bMaintenance of Tiger Reserves
cIndigenous Satellite Navigation System
dSecurity of National Highways

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

M-STrIPES, the Monitoring System for Tigers: Intensive Protection and Ecological Status, is a software-based monitoring tool launched by the National Tiger Conservation Authority in 2010. Field staff in tiger reserves use it with GPS devices to record patrol routes, sightings of tigers and signs of poaching, so that tiger reserves can be better managed. It has nothing to do with captive breeding, navigation satellites or highway security.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: it does not deal with captive breeding of fauna.
  • (b) Right: it supports the management and monitoring of tiger reserves.
  • (c) Wrong: India's navigation system is NavIC, not M-STrIPES.
  • (d) Wrong: it has no role in highway security.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
