- Why in news
- On 7 February 2026, India and the US issued a joint statement announcing a framework for an Interim Agreement on reciprocal trade. It sets an 18 percent US reciprocal tariff on Indian goods and keeps talks on the wider Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) going.
- Tariff rate
- The US will apply an 18 percent reciprocal tariff on originating goods of India under Executive Order 14257 of 2 April 2025, as amended.
- BTA launch
- The BTA negotiations were launched by President Trump and PM Modi on 13 February 2025.
- Indian purchases
- India intends to buy $500 billion of US energy products, aircraft and parts, precious metals, technology products and coking coal over 5 years.
- Indian tariff cuts
- India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on all US industrial goods and many farm products such as DDGs, tree nuts, fruit and wine.
- Standards review
- India will decide within six months of entry into force whether US or international standards and testing are acceptable in identified sectors.
Don’t confuse with Interim Agreement vs BTA: The Interim Agreement is a first, limited step. The BTA is the wider pact with more market access and supply chain commitments.
Don’t confuse with Reciprocal tariff vs Section 232 tariff: Reciprocal tariffs come under Executive Order 14257. Section 232 tariffs are imposed on national security grounds on steel, aluminium, copper, autos and similar goods.

Why it matters
- Lower US tariff than before gives Indian labour-intensive exports such as textiles, leather and gems better access to the US market.
- Supply chain, technology and digital trade cooperation deepens the strategic partnership.
Problems
- Opening farm and dairy-linked markets can hurt farmer livelihoods and is politically sensitive.
- The $500 billion purchase intent and the clause letting either side modify commitments create uncertainty.
Way forward
- Conclude the Interim Agreement and the BTA with safeguards for sensitive farm sectors.
- Diversify export markets through other trade pacts to reduce dependence on the US.
