Question 83: Economy and Social Development

Consider the following statements :

  1. 1.India has ratified the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) of WTO.
  2. 2.TFA is a part of WTO’s Bali Ministerial Package of 2013.
  3. 3.TFA came into force in January 2016.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

a1 and 2 only
b1 and 3 only
c2 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

The WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement, which aims to speed up customs procedures and cut red tape at borders, is part of the Bali Ministerial Package of December 2013, so Statement 2 is right. India ratified it in April 2016, so Statement 1 is right. The Agreement came into force in February 2017, after two-thirds of WTO members had ratified it, not in January 2016, so Statement 3 is wrong.

  • 1. India ratified the TFA in April 2016.
  • 2. The TFA is part of the Bali Package of 2013.
  • 3. It came into force in February 2017, not January 2016.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (b), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.

What you needed to know: It came into force in February 2017, not January 2016.

Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 2.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: India ratified the TFA, which is part of the Bali Package.
  • (b) Wrong: statement 3 is false; the TFA came into force in 2017.
  • (c) Wrong: statement 3 is false.
  • (d) Wrong: statement 3 gives the wrong date.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
