- Why in news
- On 7 February 2026, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav chaired a conference of Chief Wildlife Wardens and Field Directors in Alwar, Rajasthan. He called for a review of all policy decisions from the 28 NTCA meetings held so far.
- What it is
- The National Tiger Conservation Authority is a statutory body under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. It was set up under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, after the 2006 amendment. It oversees Project Tiger, approves tiger conservation plans and guides tiger reserve management.
- Review sought
- The Minister wants all decisions from NTCA's 28 meetings sorted into outdated, unimplemented and fully executed.
- Policy statement
- Decisions of five decades should be consolidated into a formal policy statement, to be the first agenda item at the next NTCA meeting.
- Working groups
- Four working groups were proposed to review region-specific challenges and the working of centrally sponsored schemes in tiger reserves.
- International Big Cat Alliance
- IBCA has 24 member countries so far, and the Union Budget announced a first Global Big Cat Summit in India.
- Legal basis
- NTCA became statutory through the 2006 amendment to the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
- Project Tiger
- Project Tiger was launched in 1973 and is run by NTCA as a centrally sponsored scheme.
Don’t confuse with NTCA vs Wildlife Institute of India: NTCA is the statutory regulator for tiger conservation. WII is a research and training institute that gives technical inputs, including for tiger estimation.
Don’t confuse with NTCA vs International Big Cat Alliance: NTCA is a domestic Indian statutory body. IBCA is an international alliance of big cat range countries launched by India.
Laws, judgments and statutory bodies: 30 Prelims questions since 2013 (what the law says, who chairs, legal basis). In Mains, 44 news-triggered questions, most in GS2, asking for provisions and challenges.
Why it matters
- A review of past decisions can remove outdated rules and improve implementation on the ground.
- Closer links with research bodies can bring scientific inputs into tiger management.
Problems
- Human-wildlife conflict and tiger mortality remain pending issues in many reserves.
- Funds under Project Tiger and the Tiger Reserve Fund must be used effectively.
Way forward
- Consolidate five decades of decisions into one policy statement and track implementation.
- Set up standard rescue, rehabilitation and transit treatment frameworks near tiger reserves.

UPSC’s own questions that come close to this issue, from our Prelims and Mains banks.
No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: NTCA is a statutory body and a lasting topic, but this conference only proposes a policy review. Statutory bodies drew 7 of 327 Prelims questions, so no question is likely from this item.
Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
