Question 96: Environment and Ecology

Consider the following statements :

  1. 1.Animal Welfare Board of India is established under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
  2. 2.National Tiger Conservation Authority is a statutory body.
  3. 3.National Ganga River Basin Authority is chaired by the Prime Minister.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a1 only
b2 and 3 only
c2 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

The Animal Welfare Board of India was set up under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, not the Environment (Protection) Act, so statement 1 is wrong. The National Tiger Conservation Authority was given statutory status by the 2006 amendment to the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, so statement 2 is right. The National Ganga River Basin Authority, set up in 2009, was chaired by the Prime Minister, so statement 3 is right.

  • 1. AWBI was set up under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
  • 2. NTCA is a statutory body under the Wildlife (Protection) Act.
  • 3. The Prime Minister chaired the National Ganga River Basin Authority.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: AWBI was set up under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is correct, (c) goes: it leaves 3 out.

What you needed to know: The Prime Minister chaired the National Ganga River Basin Authority.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statement 2.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. The Animal Welfare Board is set up under the 1960 Act, not the Environment Act.
  • (b) Right. NTCA is statutory and the Ganga authority was chaired by the Prime Minister.
  • (c) Wrong. Statement 3 is also correct.
  • (d) Wrong. Statement 1 is false.

Worth knowing: The National Ganga River Basin Authority was dissolved in 2016 and replaced by the National Council for Rejuvenation, Protection and Management of River Ganga, also chaired by the Prime Minister.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
