National River Linking Project (National Perspective Plan)

GS1 Water resources and river linkingGS3 IrrigationPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 10 August 2026 the Jal Shakti Ministry told Rajya Sabha the status of the 30 river-linking projects under the National Perspective Plan. Only the Ken-Betwa link has entered implementation as a priority link.
What it is
The National Perspective Plan (NPP) is the Government of India's plan for inter-basin water transfer, moving water from surplus to deficit river basins. It has a Peninsular and a Himalayan component. The National Water Development Agency (NWDA) studies and prepares reports for the links.
Number of links
30 links were identified under the NPP: 16 Peninsular and 14 Himalayan.
Implementing agency
NWDA has been given the work of river interlinking.
Environmental safeguards
An EIA is part of every FR and DPR. Ken-Betwa has an Integrated Landscape Management Plan.
Kosi-Mechi
The inter-state Kosi-Mechi link was dropped because of international dimensions. NWDA studied an intra-state version for Bihar.

Don’t confuse with Ken-Betwa vs Polavaram: Ken-Betwa is a priority NPP link implemented as a central project. Polavaram is a National Project executed by Andhra Pradesh and the Polavaram Project Authority.

Don’t confuse with Peninsular vs Himalayan component: The Peninsular component has 16 links and the Himalayan has 14. Himalayan links involve Nepal and Bhutan-side rivers in some cases.

PAIMANA (Infrastructure Project Monitoring Platform)

GS3 InfrastructureGS2 GovernancePrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 10 August 2026, PIB published an overview of PAIMANA, MoSPI's platform for monitoring Central infrastructure projects. It reports 1,847 ongoing projects worth ₹40.54 lakh crore (June 2026 data) and a performance dashboard with 165 indicators.
What it is
PAIMANA (Project Assessment, Infrastructure Monitoring and Analytics for Nation-Building) is a web-based platform of MoSPI. It monitors ongoing Central Sector infrastructure projects costing ₹150 crore or more. It replaced the older OCMS-2006 system.
Launch and owner
PAIMANA was launched on 25 September 2025 by MoSPI as a web platform for Central Sector infrastructure projects.

Don’t confuse with PAIMANA vs PRAGATI: PAIMANA is a MoSPI monitoring platform and data source. PRAGATI is the PM's ICT-based multi-modal platform for proactive governance and timely implementation, which will draw its project data from PAIMANA.

Don’t confuse with PAIMANA vs IPMP: IPMP was DPIIT's earlier project monitoring portal. PAIMANA-CRIP, run by MoSPI, has replaced it.

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting governance platform replacing OCMS and IPMP, feeding PRAGATI. Facts are few and a question is unlikely.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Asiatic Lion and Project Lion

GS3 Environment and biodiversityPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On World Lion Day, 10 August 2026, the Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav noted that the Asiatic Lion population rose from 523 in 2015 to 891 in 2025.
What it is
The Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica) is a subspecies of lion found in the wild only in India, in Gujarat's Gir landscape. Project Lion is the Centre's programme for the long-term conservation of the big cat through a landscape-level approach.
Population trend
The Asiatic Lion population rose from 523 in 2015 to 891 in 2025.
Project Lion launch
Project Lion was announced by the Prime Minister on 15 August 2020.
Range expansion
The lion range has grown from about 30,000 sq. km in 2020 to nearly 35,000 sq. km.
Project approach
The project is landscape-level and covers habitat enhancement, disease monitoring, veterinary support, scientific population tracking, technology-aided interventions, benefit sharing and community involvement.
Habitat
Gir National Park and Sanctuary in Gujarat is the main home of the Asiatic Lion.
Legal and Red List status
The Asiatic Lion is listed in Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and is Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

Don’t confuse with Project Lion vs Project Tiger: Project Lion (2020) is for the Asiatic Lion in Gujarat's landscape. Project Tiger began in 1973 and covers tiger reserves.

Don’t confuse with Asiatic Lion vs African Lion: The Asiatic Lion is a separate subspecies (Panthera leo persica) found only in India. African lions are Panthera leo leo and others in Africa.

Species and protected areas: 12 Prelims questions since 2013; they test legal status, location and the year of designation.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Species with population figures from 523 to 891 and Project Lion. Species are 4% of Prelims news questions and rarely reach Mains.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

PM VIKAS (Pradhan Mantri Virasat Ka Samvardhan)

GS2 Welfare schemes for minoritiesPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 10 August 2026, the Minority Affairs Minister told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply which schemes serve minority communities, including hill-based ones, across the country and in West Bengal.
What it is
PM VIKAS (Pradhan Mantri Virasat Ka Samvardhan) is a Central Sector Scheme of the Ministry of Minority Affairs. It merges earlier livelihood schemes into one integrated programme for education, skilling and employment of minority communities. It works alongside PMJVK, which builds community infrastructure in minority concentration areas.
Scheme type
PM VIKAS is an integrated Central Sector Scheme run by the Ministry of Minority Affairs.
Components of PM VIKAS
Four components: Skilling and Training, Women Leadership and Entrepreneurship, Education, and Infrastructure Development through convergence with PMJVK.
PMJVK
PMJVK is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme creating community infrastructure in Minority Concentration Areas, in sectors such as health, education, skilling, drinking water, sanitation, sports and renewable energy.
Notified minorities
Six communities are centrally notified: Buddhists, Christians, Jains, Muslims, Parsis and Sikhs.
Delivery channel
NMDFC works through State Channelising Agencies nominated by states; in West Bengal this is WBMDFC.

Don’t confuse with Central Sector vs Centrally Sponsored: PM VIKAS is a Central Sector Scheme (Centre funds it fully), while PMJVK is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (cost shared with states).

Don’t confuse with PM VIKAS vs PMJVK: PM VIKAS focuses on skilling, education and livelihood; PMJVK builds community infrastructure in minority concentration areas.

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Integrated scheme merging five older schemes, linked to PMJVK. Schemes are 16% of Prelims news questions, but this reply is routine.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

National Credit Framework (NCrF)

GS2 EducationPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 10 August 2026, the Minister of State for Education told the Lok Sabha in a written reply how the National Credit Framework (NCrF) is being implemented and what it has achieved so far.
What it is
The National Credit Framework is a common credit system approved under NEP 2020. It covers school, higher and skill education. It lets learners earn, store, transfer and redeem credits for all kinds of learning, and treats skill, general and experiential education as equivalent.
Scope
NCrF covers elementary, school, higher and skill education under one credit system.
Core features
It provides for creditisation of learning, and for accumulation, storage, transfer and redemption of credits, subject to assessment. It sets academic equivalence between skill, general and experiential education.
UGC SOP
UGC's SOP for operationalising NCrF in higher education allows up to 50% of a programme's credits to come from skill-based courses.
NCVET role
NCVET has framed guidelines for Recognition of Prior Learning, and industrial bodies can conduct RPL assessments for their workforce.
GER
India's higher education GER rose from 23.7 in 2014-15 to 30 in 2023-24.

Don’t confuse with NCrF vs NSQF: NSQF is the framework of skill qualification levels and the basis for recognising prior learning. NCrF is the wider credit system across school, higher and skill education.

Don’t confuse with NCrF vs Academic Bank of Credits: NCrF is the overall framework for credits. The Academic Bank of Credits is a digital store where students' credits are held.

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Lasting NEP 2020 reform with usable facts like the 50% skill credit cap. Schemes are 16% of Prelims news questions.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Global Engagement Scheme (Cultural Diplomacy)

GS2 International relationsGS1 CulturePrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 10 August 2026, the Culture Minister told Parliament that cultural diplomacy runs through the Global Engagement Scheme. The reply came to a question on a proposed National Framework for Cultural Diplomacy, and it did not announce one.
What it is
The Global Engagement Scheme (GES) is an umbrella scheme of the Ministry of Culture for India's international cultural engagement. It bundles cultural exchange, heritage outreach and safeguarding of intangible heritage under one scheme. It works through bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
Four components
GES has four components: ICEP, Project Mausam, Brihattar Bharat and the Scheme for Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage and Diverse Cultural Traditions of India.
ICEP activities
ICEP covers Festivals of India, exchange of artists and troupes, and Cultural Exchange Programmes and MoUs.
CEP coverage
The Ministry has valid Cultural Exchange Programmes with 98 countries.
Multilateral forums
The scheme facilitates India's participation in BRICS, G20, SCO and BIMSTEC cultural forums.
Role of ICCR
ICCR is an autonomous body under the Ministry of External Affairs. It complements GES through Indian Cultural Centres abroad and festivals.
Outlay and period
The revised scheme runs from FY 2026-27 to 2030-31 with an outlay of Rs 299.94 crore.
Sub-schemes
Four sub-schemes: International Cultural Exchange Programme, Project Mausam, Brihattar Bharat, and Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage and Diverse Cultural Traditions of India.
Festivals of India
Under GES, Festivals of India are organised abroad to showcase India's cultural traditions.
Grants-in-aid
The scheme gives grants-in-aid to Indo-Foreign Friendship Cultural Societies through Indian Missions abroad.
ICCR
ICCR is under the Ministry of External Affairs and runs cultural centres abroad, teaching yoga, dance, music and languages.

Don’t confuse with GES vs ICCR: GES is a Ministry of Culture scheme. ICCR is an autonomous body under the Ministry of External Affairs.

TRAI 1600 and 1601 series numbers for service calls

GS3 Telecom regulationPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 10 August 2026, TRAI issued a Direction starting phase-wise use of 1601-series numbers for service and transactional calls by non-BFSI, non-government entities, beginning with utilities, courier and logistics.
What it is
The 1600 series is a numbering block for service and transactional voice calls by banks, financial services, insurance and government entities. The 1601 series, allotted by the DoT, extends the same trusted-number idea to other sectors. It lets consumers tell genuine business calls from fraudsters using ordinary 10-digit numbers.
Phase-I sectors
Phase-I covers utilities (power, water, city gas, LPG) and logistics and courier services.
Who allots
The series was allotted by the DoT, and TRAI is directing its phased rollout.
Direct allocation
Numbers go directly to eligible entities, not to intermediaries or aggregators, after verification by telecom service providers.
Deadline
TSPs must complete migration and onboarding of Phase-I entities within 90 days of the order.
Use restriction
Entities give an undertaking of exclusive use for service and transactional calls; promotional calls are barred.

Don’t confuse with 1600 vs 1601 series: 1600 is for BFSI and Government entities; 1601 is for other sectors, starting with utilities, courier and logistics.

Don’t confuse with Service/transactional vs promotional calls: 1601 numbers are only for service and transactional calls. Promotional calls cannot use them.

Economy terms and data: 42 Prelims questions since 2013, rising in recent years; they test what a term or instrument means. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: New TRAI direction for phased use of 1601 series, parallel to 1600 for BFSI and government. Narrow topic, little for a statement.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Dynamic Ground Water Resources Assessment 2025

GS1 Geography and water resourcesGS3 EnvironmentPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 10 August 2026 the Jal Shakti Minister told Rajya Sabha that India's annual groundwater extraction is 247 BCM, with a national Stage of Extraction of 60.63%, per the Dynamic Ground Water Resources Assessment 2025.
What it is
The Dynamic Ground Water Resources Assessment is a periodic national estimate of groundwater, made by the Central Ground Water Board with State and UT governments. It estimates annual recharge, extractable resource and extraction for irrigation, domestic and industrial use. The ratio of extraction to extractable resource is the Stage of Ground Water Extraction.
Who assesses
The Central Ground Water Board does the assessment jointly with State Governments and UT administrations.
2025 headline numbers
Recharge is 449 BCM, extractable resource 408 BCM and extraction 247 BCM.
Use of extraction
Irrigation takes 215 BCM (87%), domestic use 28 BCM (11%) and industry 4 BCM (2%).
States above national average
Nine States/UTs exceed the national average, including Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi.
Per capita availability
The Central Water Commission's 2024 assessment put per capita water availability in 2021 at 1,573.19 cubic metres.

Don’t confuse with CGWB vs CWC: CGWB handles groundwater assessment and quality; the Central Water Commission handles surface water resources and per capita availability.

Don’t confuse with Jal Shakti Abhiyan vs Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari: JSA is the annual water conservation campaign; JSJB, launched in 2024, builds on it to make rainwater harvesting a people's movement.

Reports and indices: 14 Prelims questions since 2013; they test who publishes a report and what it measures.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Standing assessment by CGWB with figures: 449 BCM recharge, 247 BCM extraction, 60.63% stage. Reports are 4% of Prelims news questions.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY 4.0)

GS2 Skill developmentGS3 EmploymentPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 10 August 2026, the Skill Development Ministry told the Lok Sabha that PMKVY 4.0 has added 600+ new-age courses and gave placement, evaluation and fund-release data.
What it is
Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana is the flagship skilling scheme of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, running since 2015. It gives short-term training and recognises prior learning (RPL) so workers get certified. Courses follow the National Skills Qualification Framework and are run with industry-led Sector Skill Councils.
Start and components
PMKVY began in 2015 and offers Short-Term Training and Recognition of Prior Learning.
Demand-driven design
There is no State-wise fund allocation under PMKVY 4.0.
Placement in versions 1.0 to 3.0
Of 56.89 lakh certified in STT, 24.37 lakh were placed, a rate of 42.8%.
Industry role
Sector Skill Councils set competency standards and oversee training, assessment and certification aligned to NSQF.
Skill India Digital Hub
SIDH is a unified digital platform linking skilling, education, employment and entrepreneurship.

Don’t confuse with STT vs RPL: Short-Term Training teaches new skills. RPL assesses and certifies skills a worker already has.

Don’t confuse with Sector Skill Councils vs Awarding Bodies: SSCs are industry-led councils that set standards and oversee assessment. Awarding Bodies are industry firms designated to develop job roles.

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Flagship skilling scheme since 2015 with 4.0 in force since FY 2022-23. Placement rate of 42.8% for STT under versions 1.0 to 3.0. Routine reply, so no question.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS)

GS3 Energy and power sectorGS2 FederalismPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 10 August 2026, the Ministry of Power told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply what RDSS, IPDS and NSGM have done to digitalise DISCOMs, with sanctioned amounts and smart meter coverage.
What it is
The Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) was launched in July 2021 to improve DISCOM operations and finances. It gives financial assistance for loss reduction works and prepaid smart metering. It follows earlier central schemes such as IPDS and the National Smart Grid Mission.
Launch and aim
RDSS was launched in July 2021 to improve power supply quality through a financially sustainable and operationally efficient distribution sector.
Sanctioned projects
Rs 1.53 lakh crore is sanctioned for loss reduction works and Rs 1.31 lakh crore for smart metering.
Smart metering scope
Smart metering covers 19.79 crore consumers, 2.05 lakh feeders and 52.53 lakh distribution transformers.
India Energy Stack
The Government has started the India Energy Stack to enable data exchange across the power sector.

Don’t confuse with RDSS vs IPDS: IPDS (2014) was the earlier scheme, which subsumed R-APDRP and closed in March 2022. RDSS (2021) is the current one.

Don’t confuse with RDSS vs NSGM: NSGM was a mission to plan and monitor smart grid projects and closed in March 2024. RDSS funds DISCOM loss reduction and smart metering.

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Reply traces IPDS (2014), NSGM (2015) and RDSS (2021) in DISCOM reform. Useful background but largely a recap.

AMRUT and GIS-based Master Plans

GS2 Urban governanceGS1 UrbanisationPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 10 August 2026, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs told the Rajya Sabha how far GIS-based Master Plans have progressed under AMRUT and AMRUT 2.0.
What it is
AMRUT is the Centre's urban mission for water supply, sewerage and urban infrastructure. Its GIS-based Master Plan sub-scheme helps cities build digital geospatial databases and statutory master plans. AMRUT 2.0 extends this to smaller Class-II towns.
Constitutional basis
Urban planning, including town planning, is a function of Urban Local Bodies under the 12th Schedule. The Centre only supplements State efforts.
Funding
The GIS Master Plan sub-scheme for AMRUT cities is 100% centrally funded.
AMRUT progress
461 AMRUT cities are onboarded; draft plans are ready for 404 and 292 plans are finalised.
Data standards
AMRUT uses very high resolution satellite imagery at 1:4000 scale. AMRUT 2.0 adds drone mapping at 1:1000 scale.
Cities covered
75 cities are implementing SAM recharge interventions under AMRUT.
Who organised
MoHUA organised the event with the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA).
What SAM does
It supports cities in enhancing groundwater recharge through scientific planning and technical handholding.
Flood benefit
Bhubaneswar said SAM also helps reduce urban flooding through better stormwater infiltration.

Don’t confuse with AMRUT vs AMRUT 2.0 GIS sub-schemes: The AMRUT sub-scheme targets 461 AMRUT cities (Class-I). The AMRUT 2.0 sub-scheme targets Class-II towns of 50,000-99,999 population, with drone mapping added.

Don’t confuse with URDPFI Guidelines vs the sub-schemes: URDPFI Guidelines are advisory planning norms that encourage GIS tools. The sub-schemes are funded programmes that actually create the databases and plans.

Don’t confuse with SAM vs Catch the Rain: SAM is a programme under AMRUT for urban groundwater recharge in selected cities. Catch the Rain is a wider nationwide campaign on rainwater harvesting.

Don’t confuse with MoHUA vs Jal Shakti: MoHUA runs AMRUT and its SAM component for urban areas. The Ministry of Jal Shakti handles national groundwater and water policy.

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: AMRUT sub-scheme funded 100% by the Centre, with URDPFI guidelines and the 12th Schedule basis. Standing facts, but a question is unlikely.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Target
The restructured scheme aims to cover 1.15 crore street vendors, including 50 lakh new beneficiaries.
Credit card
An UPI-linked RuPay Credit Card with a limit of up to ₹30,000 is offered to eligible vendors.
Street Food Hubs
50 Street Food Hubs will be developed, with up to ₹4 crore per hub, including ₹25 lakh for notifying vending zones.
Reach since inception
78.68 lakh vendors have accessed over 1.18 crore loans worth ₹19,171 crore.
Census Towns
The City Region Approach brings Census Towns into the scheme, beyond Urban Local Bodies.
Launch and aim
Launched on 1 June 2020 to give collateral-free working capital term loans to urban street vendors.
Tranches
Timely repayment lets vendors move to higher loan tranches. By 12 July 2026, 29.71 lakh had taken the 2nd tranche and 8.49 lakh the 3rd.
Digital cashback
Cashback of up to ₹100 a month for 12 months, maximum ₹1200 a year, for each loan tranche.
ISB impact finding
The 2025 ISB study found average annualised business income of borrowers grew by around 20 percent between 2023 and 2025.
Loan tranches
Collateral-free loans of ₹15,000, ₹25,000 and ₹50,000 are given in three progressive tranches, with interest subsidy and credit guarantee support.

Vendors get training in financial literacy, digital literacy and food safety and hygiene, in collaboration with FSSAI.
Extension
The scheme has been extended until March 2030.
Tranche structure
Loans come in three tranches. Repaying the first and second tranches makes a vendor eligible for the second and third respectively.
UPI-linked RuPay credit card
Vendors who have repaid the second tranche are eligible for a UPI-linked RuPay Credit Card under the restructured scheme.
Extended period and coverage
Lending period extended to March 2030. Benefits extended in a graded manner to census towns, urban agglomerations and peri-urban areas.
Who identifies vendors
States and ULBs identify eligible vendors and mobilise new applications.
Launch
The scheme began in June 2020 after the Covid lockdown.
Impact study
An ISB study found average annualised business income of borrowers grew by about 20 percent between 2023 and 2025.

Don’t confuse with PM SVANidhi vs PM Street Vendors Act: The scheme gives credit. The Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014 is the law protecting vendors' rights and regulating vending.

Don’t confuse with PM SVANidhi vs SVANidhi se Samriddhi: PM SVANidhi is the loan scheme. SVANidhi se Samriddhi is its add-on component linking vendors to eight welfare schemes.

Don’t confuse with PM SVANidhi vs PM Mudra Yojana: SVANidhi is for urban street vendors, run by MoHUA, with tranche loans. Mudra gives loans to non-corporate small businesses under Shishu, Kishore and Tarun categories.
