Opening

The Skill India Mission is based on the idea of "Kaushal Bharat Kushal Bharat" i.e. Skilled India, Efficient India to tap the demographic dividend.

Body · points

Impact of Skill India mission on enhancing employability and economic development:

  1. About one crore youth have been trained under the Skill India.

  2. By imparting skill training, it bridges the skill-employment gap. Ex. checking jobless growth.

  3. It helps in providing diverse employment opportunities to the youth. Ex. Recognition of prior learning, PM Kaushal Vikas, SHREYAS.

  4. It helps in the capacity building of the youth by focusing on 'human capital formation'.

(5) It helps in providing the boost to the "economic growth and development". Eg. training to women SHGs, MSMEs.

(6) It has helped in making India the 3rd largest Startup ecosystem.

However, there are some emerging challenges:

(1) Lack of employment opportunities for all who are trained. Eg. Economic survey 2023-24 reveals that out of one crore, only 24 lakh were placed.

(2) Lack of quality employment Eg. most jobs in construction, manufacturing.

(3) Lack of effective integration of "new age technology" like AI, blockchain, robotics.

(4) Regulatory bottlenecks and hurdles. Ex. fake skill certification.

(5) Lack of effective approach to promote "labour intensive" industries.

(6) Increased "informalization" of the workforce (90%).
