National Policy on Geothermal Energy

GS3 Energy, renewable resourcesGS3 EnvironmentPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 2 November 2026, a PIB Backgrounder explained India's geothermal push: the 2025 National Policy and the first two geothermal wells commissioned at Puga Valley, Ladakh, in July 2026.
What it is
Geothermal energy is heat from the Earth's interior, tapped as hot water and steam to make power or for direct heating. The National Policy on Geothermal Energy, 2025 sets a roadmap for exploring and developing India's resources, with MNRE as nodal ministry. It covers research, drilling, reservoir management, ground source heat pumps and reuse of old oil and gas wells.
Power generation
Steam from deep wells drives a turbine connected to a generator. Used water is condensed and reinjected into the reservoir.
Global capacity
Global installed geothermal capacity reached 15.67 GW by the end of 2025.
Origin of heat
Earth's internal heat comes from radioactive decay of uranium, thorium and potassium, plus residual heat from the planet's formation.
Source of Earth's heat
Interior heat comes from radioactive decay of uranium, thorium and potassium, plus residual heat from the planet's formation.

Don’t confuse with EGS vs AGS: Enhanced Geothermal Systems and Advanced Geothermal Systems are both advanced technologies that widen exploration beyond natural hot-water reservoirs.

Don’t confuse with Geothermal power vs ground source heat pumps: Power uses deep hot water and steam to drive turbines. Ground source heat pumps use shallow ground heat for heating and cooling.

Don’t confuse with Geothermal vs ground source heat pump: Geothermal power uses deep hot water or steam to run turbines. Ground source heat pumps use shallow ground temperature for heating and cooling.

Science and technology: 57 Prelims questions since 2013; most test the concept behind the news, not the news itself. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

Biosphere Reserves in India

GS3 Environment: ConservationGS1 GeographyPrelims and Mains

Why in news
PIB issued a backgrounder on 2 November 2026 on India's Biosphere Reserves, ahead of the International Day for Biosphere Reserves on 3 November.
What it is
Biosphere reserves are areas that national governments identify to conserve biodiversity and promote sustainable development. They are designated under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme. Each has a core, a buffer and a transition zone, which balance strict protection with human use.
Indian network
India has 18 notified biosphere reserves. Thirteen are in UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves, the most in South Asia.
MAB Programme
UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme was launched in 1971. Biosphere reserves are designated under its framework.
Zonation
Each reserve has three zones: core, buffer and transition. Globally the average split is 18% core, 30% buffer and 52% transition.
Funding
The Biodiversity Conservation sub-scheme is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme, run by State Forest Departments. Cost sharing is 60:40 for most states and 90:10 for North Eastern and Himalayan states.
International Day
The International Day for Biosphere Reserves is observed on 3 November. UNESCO proclaimed it.

Don’t confuse with Biosphere reserve vs national park: National parks and sanctuaries are protected under wildlife laws mainly for wildlife and habitat. Biosphere reserves link protected areas with surrounding communities and are not a statutory category under that law.

Environment: Prelims tests bodies, programmes and the law behind them; Mains asks why plans fall short.

Scheme

Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025

GS2 Welfare schemesGS3 Rural employment and assetsPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 2 November 2026, the Ministry of Rural Development notified the VB–G RAM G Grievance Redressal Rules, 2026. They set up a multi-tier, time-bound way to handle complaints on the scheme.
What it is
VB–G RAM G is the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025. It is the statutory rural wage-employment framework that ties wage work to durable assets planned through Gram Panchayat plans. Works are chosen from a list of permissible works and planned bottom-up through Gram Sabhas.
Wage guarantee
The Act guarantees 125 days of wage employment per rural household. It came into force on 1 July 2026.
Works for fodder
22 works out of 375 permissible works relate to fodder and livestock infrastructure, such as fodder banks, silage units, pastures, shelters, milk collection centres and veterinary centres.
5% spending target
States are encouraged to raise spending on fodder and livestock works progressively towards at least 5% of total programme expenditure, where local needs and plans support it.
Planning route
Fodder works are to be integrated into Viksit Gram Panchayat Plans approved through the Gram Sabha. ICAR–IGFRI state-wise Fodder Resource Development Plans can guide district and block planning.
Statutory safeguards
Safeguards include compulsory social audit, a district-level 40% ceiling on the material component, weekly public disclosure and grievance redressal.
Livestock-dependent focus
Gram Panchayats with more than 30% livestock-dependent population may get particular attention.
Levels of redress
State Governments must set up the mechanism at Gram Panchayat, Block and District levels, each with designated Grievance Redressal Officers.
District role
The District Programme Coordinator oversees grievance redressal at the district level.
No refusal
A grievance cannot be refused registration for its format, language, manner of submission or any procedural deficiency.
Escalation
A grievance unresolved within 15 days goes to the next higher level in the State's mechanism and is monitored electronically until resolved.
Appeals
Appeals against orders under the mechanism are filed and disposed of as per Schedule I to the VB–G RAM G Act, 2025.
Start of nationwide implementation
The scheme has been implemented across all rural areas from 1 July 2026.
Face authentication
Face authentication was added to the NMMS app in March 2026 to curb fake attendance and wages claimed in others' names.
Technical partner and new features
The upgraded app was built with IIT Madras support. It adds device-level security, AI-based verification and anti-tampering safeguards.
Wage payment safeguards
Wages follow measurement in the electronic Measurement Book and are paid by DBT to bank accounts. Suspicious photo entries lead to the wage list and Fund Transfer Order being withheld.
Livelihood share
Livelihood-related works are 26 percent of the total, against 1.1 percent earlier.
Disaster category
A dedicated disaster preparedness and extreme weather category of 38 works is included for the first time.

Don’t confuse with DoRD vs DAHD: DoRD sits in the Ministry of Rural Development and runs the employment Act. DAHD sits in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and handles livestock policy.

Don’t confuse with Material ceiling vs spending target: The 40% ceiling on the material component is a binding district-level safeguard. The 5% fodder spending level is only an encouraged target.

Don’t confuse with Enquiry time vs resolution time: Enquiry must finish in seven working days; the full grievance must be resolved within 15 days of receipt.

Don’t confuse with NMMS app vs e-MB: The NMMS app records worker attendance. The electronic Measurement Book records the work actually done, as measured by technical engineers, and wages are based on it.

Don’t confuse with VB–G RAM G vs the previous scheme: VB–G RAM G is the 2025 Act whose Schedule has 375 works; the 'previous framework' had 266 works.

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.

Ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULXs) and the Eddington limit

GS3 Science and Technology: AstronomyPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 2 November 2026, PIB reported that Indian astronomers traced 24 years of X-ray data on NGC 4490 ULX-8 and found it is most likely a stellar-mass black hole accreting near or above the Eddington limit.
What it is
Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are very bright X-ray emitters outside galaxy centres. They are thought to be neutron stars or black holes pulling matter from a companion star. The Eddington limit is the maximum luminosity at which outward radiation pressure balances inward gravity for an accreting object.
Source studied
NGC 4490 ULX-8 lies in the interacting galaxy pair NGC 4490/4485 and is one of the brightest X-ray emitters in nearby galaxies.
What powers a ULX
ULXs are thought to host neutron stars or black holes that draw in matter from a companion star. The infalling matter heats up and emits intense X-rays.
Eddington limit
It is the maximum luminosity predicted by a balance between gravity pulling matter in and radiation pushing it out. ULXs seem to exceed it.
Finding
ULX-8 stayed very luminous with varying brightness. It showed no dramatic switches between accretion states. It is most likely a stellar-mass black hole accreting at or near the Eddington limit.
Future missions
ESA's NewAthena and India's proposed XSat will improve ULX studies.

Don’t confuse with ULX vs central supermassive black hole: ULXs are bright X-ray sources outside the galactic centre, powered by stellar-mass compact objects. Supermassive black holes sit at galaxy centres and are far more massive.

Don’t confuse with XSat vs AstroSat: XSat is a proposed next-generation X-ray timing and spectroscopy mission. AstroSat is India's existing multi-wavelength space observatory.

Science and technology: 57 Prelims questions since 2013; most test the concept behind the news, not the news itself. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Concept of ULXs and Eddington limit is textbook science; sci_tech has 57 news-linked Prelims questions, but this research news has few testable facts.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.
