NavIC and NVS Navigation Satellites
GS3 Space technologyPrelims and Mains
- Why in news
- ISRO launched the NVS-03 navigation satellite on GSLV-F18 on 30 October 2026 from Sriharikota; the first orbit manoeuvre was completed on 31 October 2026.
- What it is
- NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation), earlier called IRNSS, is India's regional satellite navigation system run by ISRO. It gives Position, Navigation and Timing services over India and about 1,500 km beyond its boundary. The NVS series of five satellites is meant to augment and sustain the original constellation, and adds the L1 signal.
- Signals
- NVS-03 carries L1, L5 and S band navigation payloads. L1 is the addition over the legacy L5 and S.
- Constellation design
- NavIC was designed with seven satellites: three in geostationary orbit and four in inclined geosynchronous orbit.
- Services
- Standard Positioning Service is open to civilians. Restricted Service is encrypted and only for strategic users.
- Cryogenic stage
- GSLV's third stage is an indigenous cryogenic stage using liquid hydrogen as fuel and liquid oxygen as oxidiser. It replaced the Russian-supplied stage.
Don’t confuse with GTO vs geosynchronous slot: GTO is an elliptical transfer orbit with a low perigee and an apogee near 35,786 km. The satellite later raises its perigee with an apogee motor to reach its final geosynchronous slot.
Don’t confuse with Geostationary vs inclined geosynchronous: Both have a period matching Earth's rotation. A geostationary satellite stays fixed over the equator; an inclined one traces a figure-eight on the ground.
Science and technology: 57 Prelims questions since 2013; most test the concept behind the news, not the news itself. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.
Why it matters
- Strengthens India's independent PNT capability and reduces dependence on foreign systems such as GPS for critical uses.
- Indigenous atomic clock and cryogenic stage show growing self-reliance in space technology.
Problems
- NVS-02 failed to reach its slot after an oxidiser valve fault, showing reliability risks.
- NavIC's regional coverage and limited receiver adoption restrict its use compared with global systems.
Way forward
- Launch NVS-04 and NVS-05 on schedule and improve mission reliability.
- Promote NavIC-compatible chipsets in phones and vehicles.
Put in your answer
NavIC coverage: NavIC covers India and about 1,500 km beyond its boundary, giving regional PNT services.
Indigenous atomic clock: NVS-03 carries an indigenously developed atomic clock alongside procured ones, a step towards self-reliance in timing technology.
