UPSC Prelims 2014 · GS Paper I
Question 66: Science and Technology
In addition to fingerprint scanning, which of the following can be used in the biometric identification of a person?
- 1.Iris scanning
- 2.Retinal scanning
- 3.Voice recognition
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
Biometric identification uses a person's unique physical or behavioural traits. Besides fingerprints, iris scanning (the coloured ring around the pupil), retinal scanning (the pattern of blood vessels at the back of the eye) and voice recognition (the pattern of a person's voice) are all used. So all three can be used.
- 1. Iris patterns identify a person.
- 2. Retinal blood-vessel patterns identify a person.
- 3. Voice patterns identify a person.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Iris patterns identify a person.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Retinal blood-vessel patterns identify a person.
Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 3.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. Retinal scanning and voice recognition are also used.
- (b) Wrong. Iris scanning is also used.
- (c) Wrong. Retinal scanning is also used.
- (d) Right. Iris, retina and voice are all used in biometrics.
