cKaundinya, Gundla Brahmeswaram and Papikonda Wildlife Sanctuaries; and Mukurthi National Park
dKawal and Sri Venkateswara Wildlife Sanctuaries; and Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve, in the southern Western Ghats across Kerala and Tamil Nadu, includes the Neyyar, Peppara and Shendurney wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala and the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu. The other lists belong elsewhere: Mudumalai, Sathyamangalam, Wayanad and Silent Valley fall in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, and the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana sanctuaries lie in the Eastern Ghats and Deccan region.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Correct: these sanctuaries and the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve lie in Agasthyamala.
  • (b) These belong to the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
  • (c) These are in Andhra Pradesh, apart from Mukurthi, which is in the Nilgiris.
  • (d) These are in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, not Agasthyamala.
