Question 1(a) · 10 marks · 176 words written

It is morally permissible to perform an action in pursuit of a good end in full knowledge that the action might also bring about bad results. Critically examine the statement with examples.

Opening · a definition

The question refers to the doctrine of double effect which says an action done for positive consequences is ethical even if there are negative side effects.

Body · points and prose

Arguments in favour

  • As per theory of utilitarianism, if the bad results are less than the impact of good end, then it is ethical.

  • As per Machiavellian ethics, ends justify means and other negative side effects.

Example - A doctor giving painkillers to a cancer patient knows that there are side effects but it also makes the life of cancer patient bearable.

Arguments Against

Deontological ethics argue that Kant's categorical imperative requires that every action should be ethical. It would be unethical if it is against conscience (will) even if it leads to good ends.

Example: A policeman who does a fake encounter of a dreaded criminal will have a positive end. But there is a side effect of having broken the law and principle of natural justice. Hence it is unethical.

Close · a summary

Hence doctrine of double effect is valid based on the kind of side effect.
