Anti-cyclones are high pressure systems that can influence weather patterns.

Body

Characteristics

  1. They have a high pressure system in the centre surrounded by a low pressure trough.
  2. Rotation: They rotate clockwise in the northern hemisphere and anticlockwise in the southern hemisphere
  3. Origin: they can originate over both land and sea
  4. Area: they cover large stretches of area.
  5. Winds blow outward from the centre of the anti cyclone.

Influence on weather patterns

  1. During winters anti-cyclonic conditions over the subcontinent create dry conditions and increase cold waves

  1. Anticyclonic conditions over the subcontinent may delay or disrupt onset of monsoon over India

  2. anti cyclones are often associated with dry spells and heat waves during summers increasing possibility of droughts in dry areas.

  3. anti cyclonic conditions are associated with fair and non inclement weather conditions

  4. anti cyclonic conditions may also delay or disrupt the formation of cyclones in Bay of Bengal.
