National Sports Board under National Sports Governance Act, 2025

GS2 GovernancePrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 26 May 2026 the Union Government notified the National Sports Governance (National Sports Board) Rules, 2026 and the National Sports Tribunal Rules, 2026 under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025.
What it is
The National Sports Board is a statutory authority created under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025. It is the central authority that recognises National Sports Bodies and checks that they follow governance, financial and ethical standards. Its head and members are chosen on the recommendation of a search-cum-selection committee set up under rules framed under the Act.
Committee head
Cabinet Secretary Dr. T.V. Somanathan chairs the five-member committee.
Committee's task
It must recommend a panel of names for the Board's Chairperson and two Members.
Legal basis
The committee was constituted under the National Sports Board (Search-cum Selection Committee) Rules, 2026, made under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025.
Board's role
The Board grants recognition to National Sports Bodies and ensures compliance with governance, financial and ethical standards.
Composition
The Board has a Chairperson and two Members, appointed by the Central Government.
Appointment route
Names come as a panel from a Search-cum-Selection Committee, which has its own Rules, 2026.
Main function
The Board grants recognition to National Sports Bodies and ensures compliance with governance, financial and ethical standards.
Tribunal role
The Tribunal is a dedicated adjudicatory body for sports disputes, meant to reduce reliance on civil courts.
Digital features
The Tribunal Rules provide a dedicated portal for filing disputes, virtual hearings and publication of orders.

Don’t confuse with National Sports Board vs Sports Authority of India: The Board is a statutory regulator that recognises national sports bodies. SAI is the executive agency that runs training and sports promotion.

Don’t confuse with Board vs Tribunal: The Board recognises and regulates National Sports Bodies. The Tribunal adjudicates sports disputes.

Don’t confuse with Sports Authority of India: SAI promotes and trains sports; the Board is a regulator of governance standards of sports bodies.

Laws, judgments and statutory bodies: 30 Prelims questions since 2013 (what the law says, who chairs, legal basis). In Mains, 44 news-triggered questions, most in GS2, asking for provisions and challenges.

PM-WANI (Prime Minister's Wi-Fi Access Network Interface)

GS3 Science and Technology: Digital connectivityPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 26 May 2026 the Ministry of Communications announced PM-WANI reforms: QR-based laptop login, 15/30/60-minute plans and standard hotspot names. DoT issued the circulars on 22 May 2026.
What it is
PM-WANI is a framework for public Wi-Fi hotspots in India, run by the Department of Telecommunications. It works through a distributed set of Public Data Offices (PDOs), aggregators (PDOAs) and app providers, with no licence fee for providers. It aims to spread affordable internet under Digital India.
Circulars
The reforms came through two DoT circulars dated 22 May 2026.
Deadline
Stakeholders must implement the revised guidelines within eight weeks, so the features are operational by July 2026.
QR login
Laptops and other secondary devices can connect by scanning a QR code on the login page using an authenticated smartphone app.
Ecosystem players
PM-WANI runs through PDOs, PDOAs and app providers under Digital India.
Approval
The Union Cabinet approved PM-WANI in December 2020.

Don’t confuse with PDO vs PDOA: A PDO runs the hotspot and sells access to users. A PDOA is the aggregator that handles authorisation and accounting for many PDOs.

Don’t confuse with PM-WANI vs BharatNet: BharatNet lays optical fibre to gram panchayats. PM-WANI offers Wi-Fi hotspots to users.

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: A lasting scheme and digital public infrastructure. This release brings only user-facing changes with few testable facts, so no practice question.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.

On 26 May 2026, the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs held the first meeting of the newly constituted National Council for Public Works (NCPW) at Sankalp Bhawan, New Delhi.
What it is
The National Council for Public Works is a national-level platform under the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs. It brings Centre, States, urban local bodies, PSUs, academia and industry together on public works. It aims at coordination, innovation, standardisation and capacity building.

The Secretary, MoHUA, is the Chairman of the Council. The Union Minister and the Minister of State of MoHUA are its patrons.
Role of CPWD
The Council works under the aegis of MoHUA, with CPWD as the coordinating agency.
Headquarters
The headquarters will be at the National CPWD Academy, Ghaziabad. The Delhi office will be at India Habitat Centre.
Centre-State link
States will sign a Memorandum of Understanding and nominate representatives to the Council.
Working groups
Proposed thematic groups include technology and innovation, green construction, contract management and dispute resolution, training, research and standards, project planning, asset management and large public events.

Don’t confuse with NCPW vs CPWD: CPWD is the Centre's construction and maintenance agency. NCPW is a new coordination platform, with CPWD as its coordinating agency.

Laws, judgments and statutory bodies: 30 Prelims questions since 2013 (what the law says, who chairs, legal basis). In Mains, 44 news-triggered questions, most in GS2, asking for provisions and challenges.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: A new national platform with a coordinating role. Few testable facts, and coordination bodies rarely draw questions (statutory bodies were 7 of 327 Prelims questions).

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
