Question 82: International Relations and Current Affairs
Which of the following statements with regard to the Grand Slam Tennis Tournaments is/are correct ?
- 1.The tournaments have a shared governance structure establishing the partnership among the four Grand Slam tournaments.
- 2.They are open for entry to all internationally ranked tennis players above the age of 14.
- 3.There is a limitation on the number of ‘Wild Cards’ a player may receive to compete in a Grand Slam Tournament.
Select the answer using the code given below :
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).
The four Grand Slams (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open) run under a shared governance structure, the Grand Slam Board, which sets up their partnership, so statement 1 is accepted. Entry is open to internationally ranked players above the age of 14, which UPSC's key accepts (statement 2). Statement 3 is not accepted: the cap on wild cards applies to how many a tournament may award, not to how many a player may receive.
- 1. The Grand Slam Board provides shared governance among the four events.
- 2. Entry is open to internationally ranked players above 14, per the key.
- 3. Wild cards are capped per tournament, not per player.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 2 is correct, (c) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Entry is open to internationally ranked players above 14, per the key.
The red flag in statement 2 is “all”. In UPSC’s papers, statements with “all” were true 41% of the time (76 statements). A hint, not a rule.
- Then, if you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.
What you needed to know: Wild cards are capped per tournament, not per player.
Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statement 1.
This follows UPSC’s provisional key; the final key could change it.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right: shared governance and open entry are accepted; the per-player wild-card limit is not.
- (b) Wrong: it leaves out statement 1 and includes statement 3.
- (c) Incomplete: statement 2 is also accepted.
- (d) Wrong: statement 3 is not accepted.
Worth knowing: The age-14 entry rule and the wild-card wording could not be independently confirmed here; the explanation follows UPSC's key.
Only the provisional key (27 May 2026) was found; the final key replaces it when found.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
