India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership

GS2 Bilateral relationsGS3 EconomyPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 20 May 2026, India and Italy issued a Joint Declaration after PM Modi's visit to Italy (19-20 May). The two leaders raised ties to a Special Strategic Partnership.
What it is
India-Italy ties were raised to a Strategic Partnership earlier and are guided by the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029. Italy is an EU member and a G7 and G20 partner of India. Cooperation spans trade, defence, space, science, migration and culture.
New status
The leaders raised bilateral relations to a Special Strategic Partnership.
Trade target
Both sides aim to raise bilateral trade to 20 billion euros by 2029.
IMEC
They urged the first IMEC Ministerial meeting to take concrete steps in 2026.
Innovation hub
INNOVIT India, an innovation hub in India, will link the two innovation ecosystems.
Maritime security
A new Dialogue on Maritime Security will be launched.

Don’t confuse with IMEC vs Mattei Plan: IMEC is a trade corridor linking India, the Middle East and Europe. The Mattei Plan is Italy's development initiative for Africa.

Don’t confuse with Strategic vs Special Strategic Partnership: Special Strategic Partnership is the new, higher label for India-Italy ties, above the earlier Strategic Partnership.

International bodies and relations: the largest group of news questions in Prelims (61 since 2013), often about background, members and location. In Mains, 27 news-triggered questions, mostly on India's interests.

Atal Innovation Mission and Atal Tinkering Labs

GS3 Science and Technology policyGS2 EducationPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 20 May 2026, Atal Innovation Mission (NITI Aayog) opened applications for 500 new Atal Tinkering Labs in Jammu & Kashmir under its Frontier Region Program, with the J&K School Education Department and the University of Kashmir.
What it is
Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) is NITI Aayog's flagship initiative to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in India. Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) are workspaces in schools where students learn by making, using tools such as 3D printers, robotics and electronics kits. The Frontier Region Program adapts this model for geographically difficult regions.
Implementing body
AIM is part of NITI Aayog. Its Mission Director is Deepak Bagla.
Scale of the new rollout
500 new ATLs are planned across the Union Territory of J&K, as a key part of the Frontier Region Program.
Eligible schools and relaxations
Government, Private and Aided schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, Army Goodwill schools and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas can apply. Criteria on school space and enrolment are relaxed, with special consideration for remote, border, hilly and underserved areas.
Nodal mentoring institution
The University of Kashmir was named the nodal mentoring institution for the ATL ecosystem in the UT, at the ATL Sarthi and Frontier Region Program launch in September 2025.
Who can apply
Only non-ATL schools in the listed categories can apply, through the AIM online application portal.

Don’t confuse with AIM vs Startup India: AIM, under NITI Aayog, promotes innovation from school level (ATL) to startups (incubators). Startup India is run by DPIIT and focuses on startup recognition, tax benefits and funding.

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Scheme with a lasting topic, but this is a regional rollout; scheme questions rely on features, and none are given here.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Science and technology

Solar Corona Heating Problem and Alfvénic Waves

GS3 Science and TechnologyPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 20 May 2026 the Ministry of Science & Technology reported a study by ARIES Nainital and IIT Delhi. It shows how Alfvénic waves can create spectral line asymmetries, a new way to detect hidden turbulence in the Sun's corona.
What it is
The coronal heating problem asks why the Sun's corona, its outer atmosphere, is at millions of degrees while the visible surface (photosphere) is only about 6,000 K. Alfvénic waves are magnetohydrodynamic waves that travel along magnetic field lines in plasma. They are a leading candidate for carrying energy upward and heating the corona.
Who did the study
ARIES Nainital, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, worked with IIT Delhi. The researchers were Ambika Saxena and Prof. Vaibhav Pant.
Mechanism
Wave evolution creates fine-scale structure through phase mixing, which leads to turbulence.
Why asymmetry appears
The corona is optically thin, so emission from regions moving at different velocities overlaps along the line of sight. The line then shows alternating blue and red wing asymmetries.
Size of the effect
Simulated asymmetries reach about 20 percent of the line peak intensity, with apparent secondary velocities of 30 to 40 km per second.
Observation prospect
High-resolution facilities such as DKIST may soon allow the phenomenon to be observed.

Don’t confuse with Corona vs photosphere: The photosphere is the visible surface at about 6,000 K. The corona is the outer atmosphere, at over a million kelvin.

Don’t confuse with Alfvénic waves vs flows or jets: Earlier work read blueward asymmetries as upward flows or jets. This study shows transverse Alfvénic waves can also produce asymmetries.

Science and technology: 57 Prelims questions since 2013; most test the concept behind the news, not the news itself. In Mains, 12 news-triggered questions.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Science concept questions are 17% of news-linked Prelims; this is a research finding with few testable facts.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Mission Arunachal Kiwi

GS3 AgricultureGS1 Regional developmentPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 20 May 2026, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia launched the Mission on "Arunachal Kiwi: The USP of Arunachal Pradesh", a cluster-based kiwi value chain mission with an outlay of about ₹167 crore.
What it is
The Mission on Arunachal Kiwi is a cluster-based cultivation and value chain programme for Arunachal Pradesh, led by the Ministry of DoNER. It works through convergence with other ministries, NABARD, ICAR-CITH, APEDA, NERAMAC and private investors. It forms part of the 'Brand North East' idea of one unique product for each north-eastern state.
Outlay
The mission has an outlay of about ₹167 crore and is anchored by MDoNER.
Cluster hubs
Six cluster-level post-harvest management hubs are identified, including Ziro Valley, Dirang, Kalaktang, Shi Yomi and Dibang Valley.
Four pillars
The mission rests on Convergence, Value Addition, Branding and Market Integration.
Production share
Arunachal contributes over 50 percent of India's kiwi, more than 7,050 MT a year.
Organic certification
Arunachal was the first state to get organic kiwi certification under MOVCD-NER in 2020.
Targets
Targets include 2,000 MT cold-chain capacity and positioning Arunachal Organic Kiwi in export markets by FY 2028.

Don’t confuse with MOVCD-NER vs this mission: MOVCD-NER is the earlier Mission Organic Value Chain Development scheme for the North East, under which organic kiwi was certified in 2020. The Arunachal Kiwi Mission is a new, kiwi-specific, MDoNER-led effort.

Don’t confuse with Central mission vs state mission: The Arunachal Pradesh Kiwi Mission 2025–35 is the state's own programme. The new mission is dovetailed with it.

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Scheme with a Rs 167 crore outlay and cluster approach, but a state-specific horticulture mission; Prelims scheme questions favour national schemes.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Don’t confuse with APY vs NPS: APY is a fixed-pension scheme within NPS aimed at unorganised workers. NPS is the wider market-linked pension system.

Don’t confuse with APY vs PMJJBY/PMSBY: PMJJBY and PMSBY are one-year renewable insurance covers. APY is a long-term pension scheme.

Don’t confuse with PMJJBY vs PMSBY: PMJJBY covers death from any cause (ages 18-50, Rs 436). PMSBY covers accidental death and disability (ages 18-70, Rs 20).

Don’t confuse with NPS vs UPS: NPS gives no assured payout and depends on market returns, with 14% government contribution. UPS is an option within NPS with an assured payout and a pool corpus.

Don’t confuse with EPS vs NPS: EPS (1995) is EPFO-run, pooled and formula-based for organised private workers. NPS is an individual-account scheme regulated by PFRDA.

Don’t confuse with APY vs PMJJBY and PMSBY: PMJJBY and PMSBY are life and accident insurance schemes launched alongside APY in 2015; APY is a pension scheme.

Schemes: 52 Prelims questions since 2013, 10 in Prelims 2026 alone. They test features, the period and who funds it. In Mains, 33 news-triggered questions, mostly GS3.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: APY is on file; new figures include 9 crore enrolments, AUM above Rs 54,000 crore and 55.14% women share, but data are routine.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
