UPSC Prelims 2019 · GS Paper I
Question 59: Environment and Ecology
As per the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 in India, which one of the following statements is correct?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
Option (c) is correct. The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 give detailed criteria for selecting sites for landfills and waste processing facilities in a schedule. Waste generators must segregate into three streams, wet, dry and domestic hazardous waste, not five. The Rules apply beyond urban local bodies to urban agglomerations, census towns, notified industrial townships and other bodies, and they allow regional facilities serving several local bodies, so waste can move across districts.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Segregation is into three streams, not five.
- (b) The Rules apply more widely than urban local bodies, towns and industrial townships alone.
- (c) Correct: the Rules give criteria for siting landfills and waste processing facilities.
- (d) The Rules do not bar movement of waste between districts, and allow regional facilities.
