Question 71: Geography

Among the following States, which one has the most suitable climatic conditions for the cultivation of a large variety of orchids with minimum cost of production, and can develop an export oriented industry in this field ?

aAndhra Pradesh
bArunachal Pradesh
cMadhya Pradesh
dUttar Pradesh

AnswerThe answer is (b).

Arunachal Pradesh, in the eastern Himalaya, has a mild, humid climate with heavy rainfall, rich forest cover and a wide range of altitudes from foothills to alpine zones. These natural conditions suit a large variety of orchids, and the state is among the richest in orchid diversity in India. Orchids can be grown there at low cost, so an export-oriented floriculture industry can develop. Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh lack such conditions.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Andhra Pradesh lacks the cool, humid forest conditions orchids need.
  • (b) Right: Arunachal Pradesh has the climate and diversity for orchids.
  • (c) Madhya Pradesh's climate is too dry for a wide variety of orchids.
  • (d) Uttar Pradesh's plains do not give the conditions orchids need.
