Question 72: Environment and Ecology
Which one of the following is not a site for in-situ method of conservation of flora ?
aBiosphere Reserve
bBotanical Garden
cNational Park
dWildlife Sanctuary
AnswerThe answer is (b).
In-situ conservation protects species in their natural habitat: national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, biosphere reserves and other protected areas. Ex-situ conservation keeps species outside their natural habitat, as in botanical gardens, zoos, gene banks and seed banks. A botanical garden is therefore not an in-situ site.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) An in-situ site: biosphere reserves protect species in their habitat.
- (b) Right: a botanical garden is an ex-situ method.
- (c) An in-situ site: national parks protect species in the wild.
- (d) An in-situ site: sanctuaries protect species in their habitat.
