Question 70: History and Culture
With reference to the period of Indian freedom struggle, which of the following was/were recommended by the Nehru report ?
- 1.Complete Independence for India.
- 2.Joint electorates for reservation of seats for minorities.
- 3.Provision of fundamental rights for the people of India in the Constitution.
Select the correct answer using the codes given below :
AnswerThe answer is (b).
The Nehru Report of 1928, drafted by a committee under Motilal Nehru, asked for Dominion Status, not complete independence, which Congress adopted only in 1929 at Lahore. It recommended a declaration of fundamental rights, and joint electorates with reservation of seats for minorities where they were in a minority, instead of separate electorates. So statements 2 and 3 are correct and statement 1 is not.
- 1. The Report asked for Dominion Status, not complete independence.
- 2. It proposed joint electorates with reserved seats for minorities.
- 3. It recommended fundamental rights in the Constitution.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: The Report asked for Dominion Status, not complete independence.
Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 2 or 3.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Complete independence was not the Report's demand; it asked for Dominion Status.
- (b) Right: joint electorates with reserved seats, and fundamental rights.
- (c) Includes statement 1, which is wrong, and omits statement 2.
- (d) Includes the wrong statement 1.
