Family planning refers to 'deciding appropriate time to start family, i.e., reproducing children along with number of children and duration between them'. It is guided by social-cultural factors rather than by rational decision making of parents.

(1) Son-meta preference guided by patriarchy drives parents to produce more children till a boy is born.

(2) Due to prevalence of dowery, girl child is considered as burden making them unwanted.
