A smart city project is underway, and you have been appointed Head of Procurement. Before this assignment, you held a similar role in a major public sector undertaking (PSU), where you earned a reputation for your tender drafting and vendor management skills. Given the smart city project’s scale and significant procurement requirements, you seemed the perfect fit to lead the procurement section. A month ago, your section invited tenders for building supplies. Among the applicants was Mr. Sharma, a supplier you knew from your previous role at the PSU. Mr. Sharma lived in your neighbourhood, and your spouses were friends. Despite this personal connection, you have always maintained strict professional boundaries. Upon scrutinising all the tenders, your section found Mr. Sharma’s terms the most competitive, so the tender was awarded to him. However, once the decision was made public, another vendor, Mr Patel, accused you of colluding with Mr Sharma due to your previous relationship. Mr. Patel filed a formal complaint with the Department Seniors, providing evidence of your prior association with Mr. Sharma. As a result, an enquiry was initiated, and you were placed on compulsory leave pending its outcome. This situation left you questioning where you might have gone wrong despite your efforts to maintain professionalism. 1. Do you think the above case involves a conflict of interest or there are more issues? Explain. 2. Keeping the above case in perspective, discuss the relevance of impartiality and non-partisanship as professional value. 3. In hindsight, how do you think you could have avoided the above unpleasant situation.

You recently took over as CEO of Beta Technologies, a renowned IT services and consulting firm in India established in 1990. Over the past three decades, the company has grown into a global player with clients in North America, Europe, and Asia. Known for cutting-edge solutions and strong client relationships, Beta Technologies has been a market leader in the IT sector. It has been three weeks since you took over, and one day, the company's legal head came to you with a report that they had discovered discrepancies in the company's financial statement. For five years, the company's financial Officer (CFO), Mr. Rahul Mehta, has manipulated its earnings reports. By inflating revenues and understating expenses, he has created a false image of financial health to boost stock prices and secure more investment. Further, it was found that Mr. Mehta has significant personal investments in some of the company's vendors. These vendors were awarded lucrative contracts, often at inflated prices and with favourable terms detrimental to the company. Mr. Mehta's actions have compromised the procurement process and led to financial losses for the company. As CEO, you were confronted with a critical decision. You are posted in the Department of Mines, and one of your roles is to help your Department Head negotiate mining leases with private contractors. Recently, the state government demarcated a new mining zone and planned to invite bids for the mining blocs. You were instructed to oversee the bidding process and speed up the contract negotiations. As planned, the tenders were released, bids came in, and tenders were allocated as per the norms. All this happened at a breakneck speed. You wondered, why the hurry? But it was not your place to think and question; you quietly went about your work. As the contractors were about to start operations, you had to instruct them on environmental concerns to watch out for. And to do that, you read the environmental impact assessment report submitted by a consulting firm hired by the department. To your surprise, the report was shoddy and looked cooked up. You got suspicious and raised the issue with your Head, who politely instructed you to do what you were told, and he reminded you that the Department of Mines had revenue targets and was under pressure from the Ministry. After the meeting, you, on your own accord, did some digging and found out that the report was fraudulent and the mining activity that was about to start would lead to a massive environmental disaster which the State could not afford. (a) What are the issues and value violations you notice in the above case? (b) What are the options available to you? (c) Discuss the advantage and disadvantages of each option and identify your chosen course of action. (d) Do you think that environmental considerations are sometimes overrated at the cost of development?

A prominent FMCG company recently launched a new line of eco-friendly products, including organic food items for children, positioning itself as a leader in sustainability. The products quickly gained popularity due to rising consumer interest in health and environmental consciousness. However, the company's environmental credentials come under scrutiny when a third-party non-profit organisation conducts laboratory tests on the products. The tests reveal significant discrepancies between the company's claims and the actual environmental impact of their production processes. The non-profit organisation publishes its findings, presenting substantial data to support the accusation of greenwashing. The company's response is swift and aggressive: it launched a public relations (PR) campaign to discredit the non-profit's findings. The campaign portrays the non-profit as engaging in a publicity stunt and releasing its own data to bolster its eco-friendly image. The company asserts that its products are environmentally sustainable and accuses the non-profit of spreading misinformation. In response to the growing controversy, several consumer associations approach the Bureau of Indian Standards (BSI), the national standards body, to independently verify the company's environmental claims. Given BSI's reputation for impartiality and its mandate to ensure product standards, the consumer associations expect a thorough and unbiased investigation. The BSI conducts its verification and ultimately provides the company with a clean chit, affirming that its products meet the required environmental standards. This ruling initially helped to restore consumer confidence and alleviate some of the negative publicity generated by the non-profit's report. A few weeks later, however, a new revelation shakes the foundation of the entire investigation. It is disclosed that the Chief Scientist at BSI, who oversaw the verification process, is the brother-in-law of the company's CEO. Further investigation reveals that the Chief Scientist holds a sizable share in the company, creating an apparent conflict of interest. This revelation leads to widespread outrage and questions about the integrity of the BSI's investigation. The scandal undermines public trust in both the corporation's eco-friendly claims and the credibility of BSI as a regulatory body. (a) What are the business ethics issues present in the above case? (b) What steps should regulatory bodies take to prevent conflicts of interest among their officials? How should conflicts of interest be managed when they are discovered after a decision has been made? (c) In situations where profitability and ethical responsibility appear to conflict, how should companies navigate these challenges?

Naveen and Vinod, final year undergraduate students at ABC college of engineering, are close friends. Naveen has been a meritorious student and got appointed as the secretary of the training and placement cell, which has the mandate to oversee the campus placements of the students. Vinod, on the other hand, spent more time on leisure activities and paid less attention to his academic performance. However, the lackadaisical attitude of Vinod began to reflect on his grades. His poor performance in the majority of subjects meant that he had to complete some courses again, in order to graduate in time. As Vinod struggled to complete his extra courses, he barely had any time left for anything else. The immense fatigue was also evident from his deteriorating physical and psychological health. Around this time the campus placement in the ABC college had started. While all other students were preparing for the recruitment tests, Vinod had barely any time for the same. Vinod's parents, who had taken loan for Vinod's education, are expecting Vinod to get a good job. The guilt of wasting his college years and letting down his poor parents was becoming unbearable for Vinod, as a result of which he had a nervous breakdown. Naveen, who in his capacity as secretary of training and placement cell, was busy organising the recruitment drive, was aware that the chances of Vinod getting recruited were very slim. He also knew that Vinod was repenting in true sense and working very hard to complete his courses, despite his deteriorating emotional health. Naveen was afraid that if Vinod did not get a job, he may take some extreme step. Naveen has in his possession the question paper for the recruitment test to be held next week. Vinod had in the past requested Naveen to help him in any way possible to get a decent job. While Naveen knows that sharing the questions with Vinod may help him get through the exam, it would be ethically incorrect. Now, Naveen is in a dilemma over the course of action he should take. a) What are the ethical dilemmas before Naveen in this case? b) Identify and evaluate the various courses of actions available before Naveen. If you were in Naveen's shoes, which course of action would you choose and why?

In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court halted all mining activities in the Aravalli Hills to prevent environmental degradation and preserve the ecological balance. Despite this, illegal stone mining persisted in a border district of the affected state, facilitated by local goons and politicians. A young and dynamic Superintendent of Police (SP) takes charge in the affected district, vowing to halt the stone mining racket. During a surprise inspection, the SP's team intercepts a loaded truck with illegally mined stones attempting to escape the mining area. The confrontation turns fatal when the truck driver runs over the SP, leaving him dead at the scene. Despite filing an FIR, the police struggle to make headway in the case for months. Sahoo, an investigative journalist working for a prominent TV channel, took it upon himself to delve into the case. Within a few weeks, through interactions with locals, members of the mining mafia, and government officials, he uncovered a complex web of corruption. His investigation revealed that the stone mining operations were being conducted with the tacit approval of corrupt police officers and influential politicians. The local Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), known to be very close to the Chief Minister, was deeply involved in the illegal activities. Sahoo compiled his findings into a comprehensive report and presented it to the Chief Managing Director (CMD) of his TV channel. However, the CMD, after reviewing the report, advised Sahoo against making the story public. He disclosed that the implicated MLA was a relative of the TV channel's owner and held a substantive unofficial share in the channel. The CMD further offered to take care of Sahoo's promotion and salary hike, as well as adjust the soft loan of 40 lakhs taken for his son's chronic illness, if Sahoo handed over the investigative report and refrained from publishing it. a) What are the ethical dilemmas being faced by Sahoo? b) What are the options available with Sahoo to cope up with the situation? Critically evaluate/examine each of the options identified by Sahoo.

The two were leading a rewarding professional life. However, as both worked in different companies and often had different office timings, their personal lives were getting affected. Due to their busy schedules and official commitments, they were unable to find sufficient time for each other. Things came to such a pass that the two could not spend their last anniversary together. While Prakash was working on an important project, Meena was busy with the launch of a new product. Though the two understood the importance of professional commitments, the lack of quality time with each-other was increasingly becoming a cause for concern and frustration. One day Prakash informed Meena about a vacancy in his company for the post of regional manager. Prakash, who himself was working at the same position, knew that this post was an ideal opportunity for Meena professionally. While Meena's work in her company was well appreciated and her prospects for growth were sound, she was still willing to grab the present opportunity. This would have enabled the two of them to work in a common office space, with relatively more coherence in their office timings. Consequently, she applied for the vacancy in Prakash's company. As Meena was reasonably qualified for the job and had good experience, she was hired by Prakash's company. The two were very happy about the prospects of working together. Besides working from a common office space, Prakash and Meena were able to go to and return from work together. The two were, resultantly, very happy about this positive change in their lives. Meena quickly adjusted to the new office environment and began her work in the same department as that of Prakash. Meena's positive work came into the notice of her superiors. She was frequently appreciated for her diligence and sincerity. XYZ retail was in the process of preparing a presentation for a potential government contract. While Prakash was expecting that he would be chosen for preparation, the branch head of XYZ retail entrusted Meena with this strategically important task. Prakash was visibly disappointed with this, as he had been preparing for this task for a long time. Meena could also sense Prakash's dejection, as he not only didn't congratulate Meena but also pointed out how it should have been him doing the job. Meena, as was her nature, worked hard on the report, and successfully made the presentation to the client. As the report was made and presented in an efficient manner, XYZ retail gained a big contract from the government. While the entire office was congratulating Meena for her success, Prakash remained indifferent towards Meena's achievement. Meena was visibly hurt by Prakash's behaviour. Meena's success with the government contract earned her a promotion, and she was made the head of her department. This further enraged Prakash, as now he was supposed to report to Meena. Moreover, Prakash's behaviour at the workplace changed significantly. He started misbehaving with his juniors over small things. He became careless in his work, often leading to mistakes and errors. Prakash's behaviour at the workplace had a spill-over effect on Prakash and Meena's personal lives. One day he slapped an office peon for entering his cabin without knocking. After an enquiry about the incident, Meena recommended suspension of Prakash. While the two had continuously quarrelled over trivial things since her promotion, this time Prakash's career was at stake leading to a huge fight. Earlier Prakash and Meena tried to spend time together whenever possible, now the two despised being together at home and office. While Meena could not comprehend Prakash's behaviour, Prakash was jealous of Meena's success. Meena began to re-evaluate her decision to join XYZ retail.

Rama, recently appointed as the chairperson of the Indian stock market regulator, has led a remarkable tenure, guiding the stock market to unprecedented success and surpassing previous records. However, amidst this period of achievement, serious allegations have emerged from a U.S.-based research and investment firm known as Hindenburg. The firm's report accuses Rama of deliberately stalling an ongoing investigation into alleged stock manipulation involving the business tycoon Sunil's firm, a probe that had been initiated over a year ago.
