Challenges with Border management:

Except for some part (eg!- India-Pakistan border) most of our borders are porous which makes border management a challenge!.

(1) Socio-economic activities across borders eg!- border haats - have increased permeability of border.

(2) Ethnic ties across border makes creating a strict border a challenge. eg!- North East India border with Myanmar.

(3) Another major challenge comes in form of difficult hilly terrain which makes guarding of borders a tough affair. (4) lack of proper border infrastructure eq!- Electricity, water supply, etc creates challenges.

This has led to issues like:

(1) Cross border infiltration of Refugees - eq!- Rohingyas from Myanmar (2) Influx of illegal migrants - eq!- recent influx as witnessed during Bangladesh crisis (3) Rise in instances of drug trafficking (since India lies in proximity of:

  • Golden Triangle
  • Golden crescent ) (4) Creates instability within Indian states eq!- Manipur crisis (2023)

(5) leads to increase in internal security challenges in form of insurgency eg:- J&K insurgency (6) Makes organised crimes easy eg:- wildlife trafficking, human, arms, drug trafficking, etc

In order to avoid such havoc :- India needs to strengthen its border via- (1) Use of technology on lines of Comprehensive Integrated Border Management system (CIBMS) (2) Border infrastructure must be improved eg!- Vibrant Village Prog (3) Proper border demarcation by bilateral negotiations.
