According to Geological survey of India, '12-13% of Indian area is susceptible to landslide'.
These landslides are a very common & prevalent threat to Indian population.

Landslide, causes & effects, why they occur
① Landslide ↳ slipping of rocks, soil etc from mountain with considerable slope, causing death & destruction downhill
Reasons for landslides
1] Himalayan landslides ⊙ tectonically active region (Alp-Himalayan line)
◎ Sedimentary rocks that are unconsolidated ◎ Hyper local weather events eg Kedarnath cloud burst ◎ Human Intervention (Unethical) → Tunneling in sensitive areas → Deforestation & grazing → Road & Dam construction (e.g Dham project) ◎ Rain-snow action ◎ High slope
12 (Western ghats & Eastern ghats)
◎ High slopes ◎ Development projects ◎ Deforestation & grazing ◎ Village growth along hazard line ◎ disturbance to local ecosystem ◎ Hyper local weather events (e.g Waynad landslide, Trishulwad, Malenad)
Impact of landslide/effects → Incomplete infrastructure projects & delays in completion → loss of (human life) & property
⊙ death destruction of local capital & livelihood opportunities, whole villages wiped out. ⊙ leads to poverty, disease & trauma & survivors ⊙ National security implications & Himalayan region

1] Vulnerability analysis & Hazard zone mapping 2] Disaster plans creation & relocation from hazard & risk prone zones 3] Avoiding deforestation & grazing in sensitive areas 4] EIA (necessity) & should be avoided 5] Measure & coordination for relief & rehabilitation 6] checking & pro-active removal of loose rocks in sensitive zones.
Gadgil committee & Kasturirangan committee reports need to be implemented to the 'T' for the (menace of) landslide to have reduced impact.
