In the news since 27 February 2026

Why in news
On 27 February 2026, DRDO announced three successive successful flight-trials of VSHORADS from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off Odisha. The tests were user validation trials in final deployment configuration.
What it is
VSHORADS is a man-portable air defence system built to destroy low-flying, high-speed aerial threats at very short range. It was designed by Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad, with other DRDO labs and development-cum-production partners. It is meant to serve the Army, Navy and Air Force.
Developer
Designed and developed indigenously by Research Centre Imarat with other DRDO laboratories and development-cum-production partners.
Users
Meant for all three services: Army, Navy and Air Force.
Trial configuration
Tests were in final deployment configuration, with field operators doing target acquisition and firing.
Type
A man-portable air defence system (MANPADS), a shoulder-fired class of weapon.

Don’t confuse with VSHORADS vs QRSAM: VSHORADS is a man-portable system for very short range. QRSAM (Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile) is a vehicle-based system for protecting moving armoured columns, with a longer range.

Don’t confuse with VSHORADS vs Akash: Akash is a medium-range surface-to-air missile system, not man-portable, and covers much longer ranges than VSHORADS.

Defence: Prelims tests exercises (with whom), equipment (who makes it) and firsts.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: Indigenous man-portable air defence system developed by RCI; defence is 8 of 327 news-linked Prelims questions and almost never reaches Mains.

Worth revising until Prelims 2027: most news questions come within two years of the event.
