Question 19: Science and Technology
From which one of the following did India buy the Barak anti-missile defence systems?
AnswerThe answer is (a).
India bought the Barak anti-missile defence system from Israel. Barak (meaning lightning in Hebrew) was developed by Israel Aerospace Industries as a ship-borne short-range system to protect warships against sea-skimming anti-ship missiles, and it was installed on Indian Navy ships. The deal is a marker of growing India-Israel defence cooperation, which also includes Phalcon airborne warning systems and Heron drones.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Israel developed and supplied the Barak system.
- (b) France supplies India with other equipment, not Barak.
- (c) Russia supplies India with other systems, not Barak.
- (d) The USA did not supply the Barak system.
