India-Slovakia Comprehensive Partnership

GS2 International RelationsPrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 15 June 2026, PM Modi made a State Visit to Slovakia, the first by an Indian PM since 1993. India and Slovakia raised ties to a Comprehensive Partnership.
What it is
Slovakia is a Central European country and an EU member. India and Slovakia set up diplomatic relations in 1993, when Slovakia became independent. The Comprehensive Partnership covers defence, technology, trade, energy, mobility and counter-terrorism.
First PM visit
This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia since its independence in 1993.
Upgrade of ties
The two leaders agreed to raise the relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership.
UNSC and NSG
Slovakia continues to support India's permanent membership of a reformed UN Security Council. It reaffirmed a constructive approach to India's NSG membership.
Regional groupings
The leaders agreed to support cooperation with the Slavkov 3, Visegrad 4 and 3 Seas Initiative.
Counter-terrorism
A Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism will be set up. Both back early adoption of the CCIT at the UN.
Defence Letter of Intent
A Letter of Intent on Defence Cooperation was signed.

Don’t confuse with Visegrad 4 vs Slavkov 3 vs 3 Seas: All are Central European groupings. The Visegrad 4 has Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary. The Slavkov 3 is a smaller format, and the 3 Seas Initiative is a connectivity and infrastructure forum.

Don’t confuse with Letter of Intent vs MoU: A Letter of Intent states an intention to cooperate, while an MoU sets out a framework of cooperation. Both are non-binding in general.

International bodies and relations: the largest group of news questions in Prelims (61 since 2013), often about background, members and location. In Mains, 27 news-triggered questions, mostly on India's interests.

No practice question for this one; the card may still help an answer. Why: First Indian PM visit to Slovakia; relationship elevated. Bilateral ties with no testable provisions; UPSC sets few Prelims questions on routine bilateral visits.

Worth revising until Prelims 2028: most news questions come within two years of the event.

Law and statutory body

National Sports Board under National Sports Governance Act, 2025

GS2 GovernancePrelims and Mains

Why in news
On 15 June 2026 the Union Government constituted a 5-member Search-cum-Selection Committee, headed by Cabinet Secretary Dr. T.V. Somanathan, to pick the Chairperson and two Members of the National Sports Board under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025.
What it is
The National Sports Board is a statutory authority created under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025. It is the central authority that recognises National Sports Bodies and checks that they follow governance, financial and ethical standards. Its head and members are chosen on the recommendation of a search-cum-selection committee set up under rules framed under the Act.
Committee head
Cabinet Secretary Dr. T.V. Somanathan chairs the five-member committee.
Committee's task
It must recommend a panel of names for the Board's Chairperson and two Members.
Legal basis
The committee was constituted under the National Sports Board (Search-cum Selection Committee) Rules, 2026, made under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025.
Board's role
The Board grants recognition to National Sports Bodies and ensures compliance with governance, financial and ethical standards.
Composition
The Board has a Chairperson and two Members, appointed by the Central Government.
Appointment route
Names come as a panel from a Search-cum-Selection Committee, which has its own Rules, 2026.
Main function
The Board grants recognition to National Sports Bodies and ensures compliance with governance, financial and ethical standards.
Tribunal role
The Tribunal is a dedicated adjudicatory body for sports disputes, meant to reduce reliance on civil courts.
Digital features
The Tribunal Rules provide a dedicated portal for filing disputes, virtual hearings and publication of orders.

Don’t confuse with National Sports Board vs Sports Authority of India: The Board is a statutory regulator that recognises national sports bodies. SAI is the executive agency that runs training and sports promotion.

Don’t confuse with Board vs Tribunal: The Board recognises and regulates National Sports Bodies. The Tribunal adjudicates sports disputes.

Don’t confuse with Sports Authority of India: SAI promotes and trains sports; the Board is a regulator of governance standards of sports bodies.

Laws, judgments and statutory bodies: 30 Prelims questions since 2013 (what the law says, who chairs, legal basis). In Mains, 44 news-triggered questions, most in GS2, asking for provisions and challenges.
