Opening

Green revolution provided food security, growth of farm incomes to the nation accordingly to economists. But sociological understanding reflects a paradox created due to it.

Body · points

→ Green revolution functional to society:

  • Bullock cart capitalism: Kathleen Gough highlights the rise of capitalism in villages. Soil is breeding class as more affluency is achieved.

  • facilitated caste-class cooperation: requirement of labor by landed caste is high. This leads to growth of interactions and dependence on lower caste, tribals thus blurring caste based segregation.

  • Reduced rural-urban migration: males are not employed in the village. This leads to better socialisation of children and sustains rural family/kinship structure.

→ Dysfunctions: * Dhanagare, in his study of seed cooperatives highlights how dominant caste monopolises class (ex: banks, education) leading to further inequalities.

  • Migrant workers from UP-Bihar are not related to land owners leading to worsening labor conditions.

Close

Green revolution further increased regional disparities and created issues like deprivation, movements and issues like naxalism.
