Religious Revivalism
Religion played a major role in society traditionally reaching its peak in the Middle Ages where distinction between church and state blurred. However with advent of industrial revolution and proliferation of science religion took a backseat.
However the crisis created by modernity (Manochcher Dorraj) led to a vacuum in people's lives as they tried to make sense of the world. This led to religious revivalism since the 1800s (Arya samaj in India).

Fundamentalism however emerges in the context of a perceived threat to religion. Literal translation of age-old texts and feeling of insecurity leads to adoption of extreme means to propagate and protect the religion. This ideology manifests in unintended consequences like terrorism.
