Positive impact of linking Aadhar with voter ID

  1. Ensure "one person - one EPIC" → There are over 142 crore Aadhar IDs generated till date.

→ Linkage will ensure digitisation of voter EPIC, thus reducing duplication.

(2) Provide free and fair election by ensuring only the residents of constituency vote. Eg → Alleged voting by outsiders in Karnataka state election.

(3) It will provide transparency and accountability of Election Commission.

(4) It can help build public trust and simplify procedure. Eg → Aadhar - PAN card linkage.

However, there are certain limitations to this procedure of linkage as well. There are threats of creating

exclusion error:

(1) Election Commission will have to ensure resilient cyber security. → Data of aadhar and personal biometric must be protected from breach.

(2) Many remote regions have inaccessibility of Aadhar ID.

(3) Aadhar is not a proof of citizenship. → Recent Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter ID in Bihar doesn't consider Aadhar as a credible proof.

Thus, a multi pronged approach to cater to everyone's need in India is required for strengthening voter ID issue.
