Question 42: Reading Comprehension

Man does not seek self-improvement because he
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
The passage says that, worn out by labour, man does not want serious activity in his scant leisure. He turns to amusement that spares him from thinking and lets him switch off from his routine, so the culture of the age leans towards films, newspapers and crime fiction rather than serious literature. So the reason he does not seek self-improvement is that he prefers amusement and mental idleness. Lack of ability, lack of time and materialism are not given as the reason.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Not the stated reason: inability is raised only as a possibility, behind the preference for entertainment.
- (b) Wrong: the passage says his leisure is little but goes to entertainment, not that he has no time.
- (c) Wrong: materialism is never mentioned.
- (d) Correct: he seeks entertainment that keeps him mentally idle.
