Question 41: Reading Comprehension

Passage—1 · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “For two or three generations past…”

The passage is based on the idea that

aman should not work hard
bthe great evil of our age is overstrain
cman cannot think well
dman cannot care for his spiritual welfare

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

The passage says that for a couple of generations people have lived as little more than labourers, with overwork spread across every class; this leaves little time or energy for the spiritual side, for thought or for serious leisure. The idea behind it is that overstrain is the great evil of the age. It does not say people should avoid hard work, and the inability to think or to care for spiritual welfare is described as a consequence of overwork, not as a basic trait.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: the passage objects to excess, not to hard work as such.
  • (b) Correct: the passage blames excessive labour for stunting people's higher life.
  • (c) Wrong: inability to think is a result of overwork, not the main idea.
  • (d) Wrong: neglect of spiritual welfare is a result, not the main idea.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
