Question 44: Reading Comprehension

Passage - 3 · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “Diarrhoeal deaths among Indian children are mostly…”

On the basis of the above passage, the following assumptions have been made :

  1. 1.Food safety is a complex issue that calls for a multipronged solution.
  2. 2.Great investments need to be made in developing the manpower for surveillance and training.
  3. 3.India needs to make sufficient legislation for governing food processing industry.

Which of the above assumptions is/are valid ?

a1 and 2 only
b3 only
c1 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

The passage lists many sources of food contamination that need regulation and monitoring, public awareness, several agencies and trained inspectors, and training for street vendors. That supports assumption 1 (a complex issue with many remedies) and assumption 2 (investment in manpower and training). Assumption 3 is not supported: the passage speaks of regulation and monitoring generally and does not ask for new legislation for the food processing industry.

  • 1. Many contamination factors and many actors need action together.
  • 2. Training of inspectors and vendors implies investment in people.
  • 3. Legislation for the food processing industry is never mentioned.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (b), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.

What you needed to know: Legislation for the food processing industry is never mentioned.

Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 2.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: 1 and 2 are supported.
  • (b) Wrong: 3 alone is not supported.
  • (c) Wrong: 3 is unsupported.
  • (d) Wrong: 3 is unsupported.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
