Question 66: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Consider the figures given below :

To fit the question mark, the correct answer is

a 3 by 3 grid of small symbol drawings (an arc, a line or a comb of vertical strokes, each with a dot, square or triangle at one end) with the last cell marked ?; below it the four picture options (a) to (d)
a[picture: a filled square at the left end of a horizontal line with two small hooks hanging below]
b[picture: a small filled dot at the left end of a horizontal line with two small hooks hanging below]
c[picture: an open triangle at the left end of a horizontal line with two vertical strokes hanging below, ending in small A-shaped feet]
d[picture: a horizontal line with a filled dot at its right end and two small hooks hanging below]

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Each row of the grid uses every head once, every body shape once, and every hook type once. Heads: dot, square, triangle in row 1; square, triangle, dot in row 2; triangle, dot, and so the missing head is a square. Bodies: curve, line, arch; line, arch, curve; arch, curve, so the missing body is a straight line. Hooks: two, three, four-footed; four-footed, two, three; three, four-footed, so the missing one is two plain hooks.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Correct: square head, straight line, two plain hooks.
  • (b) A dot head is already used in row 3, so the third figure cannot also have it.
  • (c) A triangle head is already used in row 3.
  • (d) Dot head again; it is already used in row 3.
