Question 17: Reading Comprehension

Passage · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “It is no longer enough for…”Passage beginning “It is no longer enough for…”

According to the passage, which of the following is/are of paramount importance under the Right to Education?

  1. 1.Sending of children to school by all parents
  2. 2.Provision of adequate physical infrastructure in schools
  3. 3.Curricular reforms for developing child-friendly learning system

Select the correct answer using the code given below.

a1 only
b1 and 2 only
c3 only
dNone of the above

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

The passage pushes curricular reform hardest: a large programme to reshape the curriculum into a learning system that suits children, built on learning by doing and finding out, with quality as part of the right itself. Schooling facilities are called a necessary start but not enough, and getting children to attend is to be achieved by tackling social and economic barriers, not by placing a duty on parents. So only statement 3 is of paramount importance.

  • 1. The focus is on removing barriers that keep children away, not on a duty of parents.
  • 2. Facilities are a prerequisite but explicitly insufficient on their own.
  • 3. A major curricular reform for a child-friendly system is demanded.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 3 is correct, (a), (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 3 out.

What you needed to know: A major curricular reform for a child-friendly system is demanded.

Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 2.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Parents' sending children is not presented as the priority; removing barriers is.
  • (b) Statement 1 is not central and facilities are called insufficient.
  • (c) Correct: only the curricular reform for a child-friendly system is central.
  • (d) Statement 3 does hold, so this is wrong.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
