Question 16: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Rotated positions of a single solid are shown below. The various faces of the solid are marked with different symbols like dots, cross and line. Answer the three items that follow the given figures.

What is the symbol on the face opposite to that containing the cross?

four rotated views (I) to (IV) of the same cube whose faces are marked with a single dot, two dots, three dots, four dots, a line and a cross
aSingle dot
bTwo dots
cLine
dFour dots

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

The line face is seen with one and two dots in view I, two and three in view II, and three and four in view III. So it touches all four dotted faces and cannot be opposite any of them. The cross appears only in view IV, beside two dots and one dot. The only face left for the cross to be opposite is the line. The line may look different (upright or lying) only because the solid is turned.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Single dot is seen beside the cross in view IV.
  • (b) Two dots is seen beside the cross in view IV.
  • (c) Correct: the line touches every dotted face, leaving the cross as its opposite.
  • (d) Four dots touches both line and cross, as every dotted face does.
