Question 15: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Rotated positions of a single solid are shown below. The various faces of the solid are marked with different symbols like dots, cross and line. Answer the three items that follow the given figures.

What is the symbol on the face opposite to that containing two dots?

four rotated views (I) to (IV) of the same cube whose faces are marked with a single dot, two dots, three dots, four dots, a line and a cross
aSingle dot
bThree dots
cFour dots
dLine

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

Views I to III show the line beside every dotted face, so the line is opposite the cross and the four dotted faces ring it. The neighbouring pairs seen are one and two dots, two and three dots, and three and four dots. Two dots is therefore next to one dot and three dots. The only dotted face never seen beside it is four dots, so four dots is opposite two dots.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Single dot is seen next to two dots in views I and IV.
  • (b) Three dots is seen next to two dots in view II.
  • (c) Correct: four dots is never seen with two dots, so they are opposite.
  • (d) The line is seen next to two dots in views I and II.
