UPSC Prelims 2017 · GS Paper I
Question 38: Polity and Governance
Which one of the following objectives is not embodied in the Preamble to the Constitution of India ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
The Preamble secures to all citizens justice (social, economic and political) and liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship. 'Economic liberty' is not named as an objective; economic justice is. So liberty of thought, of expression and of belief are all in the Preamble, and economic liberty is the odd one out. Remember: the Preamble's liberty is thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; its economic goal is economic justice.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: liberty of thought is in the Preamble.
- (b) Right: economic liberty is not mentioned in the Preamble.
- (c) Wrong: liberty of expression is in the Preamble.
- (d) Wrong: liberty of belief is in the Preamble.
