UPSC Prelims 2017 · GS Paper I
Question 37: History and Culture
Consider the following pairs :
| 1 | Radhakanta Deb | First President of the British Indian Association |
| 2 | Gazulu Lakshminarasu Chetty | Founder of the Madras Mahajana Sabha |
| 3 | Surendranath Banerjee | Founder of the Indian Association |
Which of the above pairs is/are correctly matched ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
Raja Radhakanta Deb was the first president of the British Indian Association (1851, Calcutta), so pair 1 is right. Surendranath Banerjee founded the Indian Association in 1876, so pair 3 is right. Gazulu Lakshminarasu Chetty founded the Madras Native Association (1852), not the Madras Mahajana Sabha, which was formed in 1884 by M. Veeraraghavachariar, G. Subramania Iyer and P. Anandacharlu, so pair 2 is wrong. Remember: Chetty = Madras Native Association.
- 1. Radhakanta Deb was the first president of the British Indian Association.
- 2. Chetty founded the Madras Native Association; the Mahajana Sabha came later, in 1884.
- 3. Surendranath Banerjee founded the Indian Association in 1876.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Incomplete: pair 3 is also correct.
- (b) Right: pairs 1 and 3 are correct; pair 2 is wrongly matched.
- (c) Wrong: pair 2 is incorrect.
- (d) Wrong: pair 2 is incorrect.
