Question 69: History and Culture

Consider the following :

  1. 1.Calcutta Unitarian Committee
  2. 2.Tabernacle of New Dispensation
  3. 3.Indian Reform Association

Keshab Chandra Sen is associated with the establishment of which of the above?

a1 and 3 only
b2 and 3 only
c3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Keshab Chandra Sen set up the Indian Reform Association in 1870 and proclaimed the Church of the New Dispensation (Nava Vidhan) in 1880, whose place of worship was the Tabernacle of New Dispensation. The Calcutta Unitarian Committee was formed in the early 1820s in the circle of Ram Mohan Roy with William Adam, so it is not Keshab's. Items 2 and 3 are his.

  • 1. The Calcutta Unitarian Committee came from Ram Mohan Roy's circle with William Adam.
  • 2. Keshab founded the New Dispensation and its Tabernacle.
  • 3. He established the Indian Reform Association in 1870.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: The Calcutta Unitarian Committee came from Ram Mohan Roy's circle with William Adam.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (c) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: Keshab founded the New Dispensation and its Tabernacle.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statement 3.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) The Calcutta Unitarian Committee is not Keshab's: it belongs to Ram Mohan Roy's time.
  • (b) Right: he established the Tabernacle of New Dispensation and the Indian Reform Association.
  • (c) The Tabernacle of New Dispensation is also his.
  • (d) The Unitarian Committee is not his, so 'all three' fails.
