Question 68: Environment and Ecology

‘Gadgil Committee Report’ and ‘Kasturirangan Committee Report’, sometimes seen in the news, are related to

aconstitutional reforms
bGanga Action Plan
clinking of rivers
dprotection of Western Ghats

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

The Gadgil Committee (Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel, 2011) and the Kasturirangan Committee (High Level Working Group, 2013) were both appointed by the Environment Ministry to recommend how to protect the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats. Gadgil proposed treating most of the Ghats as ecologically sensitive in graded zones, and Kasturirangan proposed a smaller area of about 37 percent.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) They did not deal with constitutional reforms.
  • (b) They did not deal with the Ganga Action Plan.
  • (c) They did not deal with river linking.
  • (d) Right: both reports concern protection of the Western Ghats.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
