Question 9: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Consider that :

  1. 1.A is taller than B.
  2. 2.C is taller than A.
  3. 3.D is taller than C.
  4. 4.E is the tallest of all.

If they are made to sit in the above order of their height, who will occupy the mid position ?

aA
bB
cC
dD

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

Chain the comparisons: D is taller than C, C is taller than A, A is taller than B, and E is the tallest of all. So from tallest to shortest the order is E, D, C, A, B. With five people the middle position is the third, which is C. For ordering puzzles, write the chain in one line before reading off any position.

  • 1. Given: A is above B in height.
  • 2. Given: C is above A.
  • 3. Given: D is above C.
  • 4. Given: E is above everyone.
Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) A is fourth in the order.
  • (b) B is last.
  • (c) Right. C is third of five.
  • (d) D is second.
