Question 10: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Consider the following statements : There are six villages A, B, C, D, E and F. F is 1 km to the west of D. B is 1 km to the east of E. A is 2 km to the north of E. C is 1 km to the east of A. D is 1 km to the south of A.

Which three villages are in a line ?

aA, C, B
bA, D, E
cC, B, F
dE, B, D

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Take E as the origin. B is 1 km east of E, at (1, 0). A is 2 km north of E, at (0, 2). C is 1 km east of A, at (1, 2). D is 1 km south of A, at (0, 1). F is 1 km west of D, at (-1, 1). A, D and E all have x = 0, so they lie on one north-south line.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) A (0,2), C (1,2) and B (1,0) do not lie on one line.
  • (b) Right. A, D and E share x = 0.
  • (c) C (1,2), B (1,0) and F (-1,1) are not in a line.
  • (d) E (0,0), B (1,0) and D (0,1) form a corner, not a line.
