Question 55: Data Interpretation

If the number of female Physics professors in the age group 25 – 34 equals 25% of all the Physics professors in that age group, then what is the number of male Physics professors in the age group 25 – 34 ?

This item needs both figures on page 30, so the box covers the page: Figure 2, a pie chart of the age of Physics professors (top right), and Figure 1, a bar chart of the number of professors in selected disciplines in a University by sex (bottom left).
a9
b6
c3
d2

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Physics has 32 + 8 = 40 professors, and 30 per cent of them, which is 12, are aged 25 to 34. If the women in that age group are 25 per cent of those 12, there are 3 women, so the number of men is 12 - 3 = 9. Check that 3 is a quarter of 12, which confirms the split.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right. 12 - 3 = 9 men.
  • (b) Wrong. 6 would make women half of the group.
  • (c) Wrong. 3 is the number of women, not men.
  • (d) Wrong. 2 men and 3 women would make only 5, not 12.
