Directions for the following 5 (five) items : Study the two figures given below and answer the five items that follow. Figure 1 : a bar chart of the number of professors in selected disciplines (Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Botany, Psychology, Economics) in a University by sex, male and female bars, scale 0 to 32.
a40%
b50%
c60%
d70%

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

In Figure 1, Psychology has 4 male and 6 female professors, which makes 10 in all. The share of females is 6 out of 10, which is 60 per cent. Do not confuse this with the male share, which is 40 per cent, the other option that looks tempting.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. 40 per cent is the male share, 4 of 10.
  • (b) Wrong. 50 per cent would need equal numbers.
  • (c) Right. 6 of 10 is 60 per cent.
  • (d) Wrong. 70 per cent would be 7 of 10.
