Question 26: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Given that,

  1. 1.A is the brother of B.
  2. 2.C is the father of A.
  3. 3.D is the brother of E.
  4. 4.E is the daughter of B.

Then, the uncle of D is

aA
bB
cC
dE

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

E is B's daughter and D is E's brother, so D is also B's child. A is B's brother, which makes A the brother of D's parent, that is, D's uncle. C is A's father, so he is a generation above, and E is D's sister. Remember: an uncle is a parent's brother, and the relationship holds whether B is D's father or mother.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right. A is the brother of B, who is D's parent, so A is D's uncle.
  • (b) Wrong. B is D's parent, not D's uncle.
  • (c) Wrong. C is in the generation above, as A's father.
  • (d) Wrong. E is D's sister.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
